Plattner Family from Thusis

Beitrag von Kari » Do 5. Jan 2006, 22:46

Deutsche Übersetzung weiter untenI'm looking for any information I can find on Nicolaus Plattner born in Thusis in 1832. He came to the United States around 1857 and married Anna Marie Rath (she was born in Breitnau Germany in 1842) in Iowa. They had 10 children, all born in Iowa. He died in Colorado. I'm trying to find out who his parents were and if he had any brothers or sisters. Nicolaus was my great-great grandfather. His son George was my great grandfather and George's son Nicolas was my grandfather. I have information on him once he came to the United States, but I'd like to try and go further back. Any information is truely appreciated. Thank You.
I suche jegliche Informationen zu Nicolaus Plattner, geboren 1832 in Thusis GR.

Right now I can only confirm that Plattner have been citizens of Thusis since before 1800 - see Occurences Plattner in Switzerland.

Im Moment kann ich nur bestätigen, dass Plattner seit vor 1800 Bürger von Thusis sind - siehe Vorkommen Plattner in der Schweiz.

Thank you, Wolf. I'll look into these, but if you find anything else out, let me know. I've hit a dead-end. I can find information on Nicolaus once he came to the United States, but I'd really like to know if he had any brothers or sisters or who his parents are or any other relatives. If any are still in Thusis and they would like to email me, please do. Thank you.

Ursulina Parli vom Staatsarchiv Graubünden schreibt dazu
Nikolaus Platner was born on 6th of May 1832. His parents were: Jacob Platner und Brida Barbara nee Mäuli. To find out if Nikolaus had any brothers and sisters I would have to read the church records of Thusis (on microfilms) for about 20 years.
Owing to the lack of staff and time our archive is unable to carry out detailed genealogical research.
Nikolaus Platner wurde am 6.5.1832 als Sohn von Jacob Platner und seiner Frau Brida Barbara, geborene Mäuli, geboren.

You could likely get a "Familienschein" for one more generation from the Thusis Civil Registry Office - which would include all the information on Nicolaus' brothers and sisters - but there will be a fee for it, likely in excess of $ 100, the exact amount would have to be enquired. Alternatively you could check the church records yourself: Thusis records date back to 1601 and have been filmed by LDS (the Mormons).

Knowing the staffing situation in Swiss State Archives I fully understand that they just don't have the time to do extensive genealogical research. I am grateful to Ursulina Parli that she checked for Nicolaus' baptismal entry - so you can be sure that you are on the right track in Thusis!

BTW - "Mäuli" would today be spelled Meuli - a typical Graubünden name, which didn't spread to other cantons before 1931.

Thank you so much Wolf!!! This is wonderful news and more than I could of hoped for. I'll check with LDS and see what else I can find, as I use their website quite frequently. Now, I have to share this with my dad. He'll be thrilled.
