Speters von Isbach
Hello to all,
I am living in the Netherlands and I am looking for Adam Johan Speters (Adam Speeter, and so on) from Isbach. I suppose Isbach is near Basel but I am not sure. That is the reason I post the message here. Adam was born about 1773 in Isbach and his father was called Adam also and his mother unknown. The earliest record I have found of Adam in the Netherlands was the baptism of his illegal child at 1799 in Leiden. I hope someone can help me I am searching for Adam many years.
Kind regards,
Linda Speters

I cannot find a community Isbach in Switzerland - but there is Ipsach in canton Bern.
Neither is Speters listed in the Swiss Surname Register - although Peter is quite a common name here.
What is your source indicating about a Swiss origin?

Speters(?) von Isbach(?)
In his marriage record was stated he was a youngmen from Isbach. During my search I have found in the Netherlands a soldier with the name Speater from Laubbis-Isbach with the Swiss nationality and an river named Isbach near Basel (north-west of Basel). It is a very confussing search because in his death certificate his birth place is named as Lauwens Wespak furstentum von Ronke. I have searched for the furstentum in (old) Europe but can't find it as well. So you can see it is not much of a source but just a way of following the little bit of information I have.

Hallo Linda,
This is really a problem very difficult to solve. I looked in the Digitale Stamboom of Leiden. As a place of origin is not mentioned, I wonder where you found Isbach. You wrote before: in the marriage record. In Leiden normally a place of origin is mentioned, unless the case the groom was born in Leiden. At that time he was an "opperman", so not a soldier (anymore?). There might be a a very small chance to proof that Adam is identical with the soldier. Can you give all the details you know about him?
Regards,
Bernard Krijbolder

Hallo Bernard,
The soldier\'s name was Willem Spaeter and he lived in the Netherlands in Veere and Veenhuizen so he is an other person but his birth place is Laubbis-Isbach. That is the reason for me to leave a message on this forum.
The first record I have from Adam Johan Speters (or Adam Speeter) is the baptism of his and Sara van der Blom illegal daughter Elisabeth Sara in 1799 in Leiden.
Then they had an illegal son George born according to his marriage record on Jersey in 1801. But on the Channel Islands there are no records of the name Speters or a name resembling to Speters.
Adam and Sara married in Leiden in the Netherlands in 1802. In this record (I have a copy of the original) is his profession \"opperman\" (assistent bricklayer) and he is a youngman from Isbach .
In 1804 they baptize a daughter Neeltje in Burgh in the Netherlands. In this record his profession is soldier.
At that time they officially still lived in Leiden because the note (don\'t know the right translation) from the church in Leiden was given august 1807 to Zierikzee.
In 1807 a daughter Maria was baptized in Zierikzee. The profession of Adam was then coastguard. At that time the coastguards were soldiers in the Netherlands. But I can\'t find him in any coastguard records.
Later they had more children and his profession was bricklayer and they died in Zierikzee.
On his death certificate was his place of birth \"Lauwens Wespak vorstendom van Ronke\" according to his son in law. But as mensioned before I can\'t find the place. He was in 1826 about 53 so he must be born around 1773. His father was called Adam and his mother unknown.
Now you understand why I am searching for many years. It is a puzzle.
Kind regards,
Linda Speters

Hallo Linda,
Lets's forget about Willem Spaeter. You are searching in the most complicated period of our Dutch military history: de Bataafse Republiek. I only see three possibilities to go on (if not already done). 1. Searching the Militaire Stamboeken 1795-1810 in the Nationaal Archief (they are incomplete; there is an index) or the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie in The Hague. 2. Presuming, that he was a Swiss soldier: searching in the State Archive of Berne the so called Hollaendische Compagnies Roedel of 1796, stating the soldiers which didn't return to their homeland in 1796/1797. This is a very precise and hard labour, but sometimes very rewarding too! 3. Asking an expert in German (?) old geographical names (of Fuerstentuemer) to analize this "Laurens Wespak".
I wish you success!

Bernard Krijbolder

Hallo Bernard,
Thank you for trying to resolve my problem.
Here are some answers:
1. A relative has search for me in the Militaire Stamboeken in the National Archive but without any luck and I have search myself at CBG int The Hague without any luck. (Maybe I will go to the National Archive myself to make sure he isn't in there)
2. I have send an email at the Bundesarchive Schweiss but I have not got a reaction yet. It takes some time at most archives. But your suggestion he was a Swiss soldier who didn't return to Switserland is a good one. In 1796/97 he was living in Leiden and his age was about 23/24.
3. Does someone on this forum knows how to contact an expert in German old geographical names?
Kind regards,
Linda Speters

A major problem seems to be that spellings of names/locations are badly distorted. A good resource in such cases (though it may become time consuming) is the ShtetlSeeker – Town Search: amongst other methods it allows a soundex search, and links directly to maps, indicating the location of all the places found.
Good luck - Wolf

Hallo Linda,
The archive, which I mentioned is not the Bundesarchiv, but the cantonal archive of Berne. Please see: http://www.sta.be.ch/site/staatsarchiv. The Bundesarchiv has no role whatsoever in this kind of matters. It is very unlikely that the Staatsarchiv Bern will do any search for you. You have to do it yourself, or aks a professional genealogist to search for you (which will in this type of search probably not very cheap at all).

The Johann Adam Spaet(h)er I am looking for is born between 1770 and 1775 in Eschbach or Laubuseschbach.
I have been to the Hauptstaatsarchiv Hessen but unfortunally I could not read the Old German handwriting.
But I have had by email the following information;
"Ich war heute im Hessischen Staatsarchiv und habe mir die Verkartung des Eschbacher Kirchenbuchs angesehen.
Es gibt: Johann Adam, * 11.5.1770 Eschbach, Sohn von Johann Adam Späther und Anna Elisabetha geb. Leineweber von Schupbach "
I would like to have some confirmation if this information is correct.
Kind regards,
Linda
