Mathys from Saint-Imier BE

Beitrag von rmvanderspek » Do 24. Jun 2010, 10:32

DEUTSCH

Hallo,

Freundlicher Respekt,

Robert

ENGLISH

Hello,

I was born and raised in The Netherlands, but my mother comes from the United Kingdom. After a long time I have found out that her ancestors come from Switzerland and have emigrated to the United Kingdom after the first World War. Her grandfather was born in Chaux-de-Fonds NE, but his father, Jean Jules Mathys, was born in Saint-Imier BE (Sankt Immer) on the 19th of January 1862. He got married in 1891, with a woman called Lucie Jean-Mairet in Chaux-de-Fonds.

My question is if someone can help me find the (grand) parents of Jean Jules Mathys.

Kind regards,

Robert

NEDERLANDS

Hallo,

Neither La Chaux-de-Fonds nor Saint-Imier is listed as old (pre 1800) place of citizenship for Mathys in Familiennamenbuch - but in 1887 someone from Bleienbach BE gained citizenship of La Chaux-de-Fonds - might just be your line.

Recommendation: contact the Civil Registry Office in Le Locle and ask about the wedding 1891 - this should give you the place of citizenship of both partners.

Thank you for the recommendation, I will try it.

It is strange that there is no one listed in Saint-Imier. My mother had contacted the 'Officier de l'état civil
Etat civil des Montagnes neuchâteloises' and asked for any Mathys in Neuchatel. They replied with some great results (I will attached it to this message). It is clear in that Jean Jules Mathys was born in Saint-Imier. Could this be false information? Or might the surname have changed?

Last question: can I acces they familienbuch online?

Cheers,

Robert

There is no contradiction - just read http://kunden.eye.ch/swissgen/CH-burger-e.html for the difference between place of birth (or living) and place of citizenship.

You will find some further explanations - and Familienanmenbuch on http://www.lexhist.ch/famn/index.php

Ah, it took me some time to understand. The Swiss have made it quite complicated :-)

Just to see if I do understand: So Jean Jules Mathys was born in St Imier, but this is nog where he was recorded. This would have been somewhere else: his home community (somewhere he might never have been)?

So I need to find out what his home community was...

The Swiss have made it quite complicated :-)
On the contrary: you will find information on a family over generations at the same office - irrespective of where the family actually moved around - even including abroad (as long as they kept their Swiss citizenship, and reported all events, which they should have done).

The office in le Locle will know - I am surprised it was not stated: the only acceptable explanation for that would be that the Mathys were indeed citizens of St-Imier (then it would often not be mentioned) - which in turn would indicate the line became extinct (as Swiss citizens) before 1935 (as not mentioned in Familiennamenbuch).

I have had the following reaction:
Which I translate as:
As is mentioned in the added documents, the city of origin is La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Is it possible that he had moved to La Chaux-de-Fonds and made that his home community? In which case he might have come from Bleienbach BE, as a Mathys is recorded in the familiennamenbuch from 1887 (4 years prior to his marriage).

Is there anyone who can confirm this?

@Wolf -> sorry I opened a second thread. I did not know how to move this one (as it seemed to be in the wrong location)

Hello,

Pierre
Thanks for your reaction Pierre. As you found another post of mine (from some time ago), you can see how long I've been trying to get some more information on my Mathys forefathers. Fortunately we can now be sure that Georges Mathys did come from La Chaux-de-Fonds and that he was actually born there. So a little piece of the puzzle (after long waiting).

Now the problem is off course Jean Jules Mathys.

I am afraid I do not fully understand your last message. I do not have a name of the father of Jean Jules, so that is no option. I understand there are different branches of Mathys in the area La Chaux-de-Fonds coming from two towns in Bern (very close to each other, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were related). It is this bit I don't understand:

Could you please explain this in different words?

I think the key might be to find out who the person was who came to La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1887. I have the feeling this might have been Jean Jules (as he married in La Chaux-de-Fonds 4 years later). If this is so, this would be a break-through, as we would than know where his home town is located.

Cheers,

Robert

Thank you. I understand.

However, I am still wondering how to move forward. Is there any way to find out which Mathys obtained citizenship in Chaux-de-Fonds (in 1887)? And if this is not Jean Jules (as I am guessing), how do I find out what his hometown was?

Anyway, I'm not sure where to click in the sites you posted. I clicked on 'cancel'/annuler, but after that I'm not sure where to click. Hope you can give me another hint.
