Hi
I am researching the family name SATTLER
By records/information I have obtained, the name SATTLER has shown
to have lived in this region Schaffhausen.
I would appreciate if anyone out there could help me with information
regarding this family name.
I am aware that the name SATTLER may no longer exist in the area. But any information that anyone comes to find,

I thank you, Gloria Sattler

Dear Gloria,

according the "Swiss Surname Register" (http://www.hls-dhs-dss.ch/famn/index.php) no SATTLER families were recorded in 1875/76 as citizens of any of the Schaffhausen communities. In "www.FamilySearch.org", the Mormon site, you will find (searching Europe - Switzerland - Schaffhausen) approx. 15 thousand pages of Church registers and the Genealogies of the town of Schaffhausen. You should, by searching the Genealogical records, be able to work out whether "Sattler" families ever lived in the township of Schaffhausen.

Regards Henry

PS: if you have difficulties to find the Schaffhausen genealogies, let me know.

Hi Henry
I thank you for your assistance in this and advising what you have discovered.
I have attempted to go to the website you advise, but not sat down and
really looked.
As for the area of Schaffhausen, this area was said along with others, such as Baden, Aargau; Basel Stadt; Bern; Muswangen, Luzerne; Visperterminen, Wallis; (also seemingly known as Visp in Canton of Valais. Also Niederglatt of Zurich. These areas are mentioned in a story to do with the Sattlers of Baar. The story goes back 1504, and Sattlers who came from these above noted areas I have mentioned.
Hence my latest noting of Schaffhausen.
If you are able to help me with searching, Henry, or even direct me to the best way to find information of this, I would so greatly appreciate it.

Gloria

Small correction: mentions in "Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz" (above reference) are not connected to status of 1875/76 - but instead to around 1935 and 1962, when the lists of citizenships were compiled.
1) Citizenships existing in 1875 will not be mentioned, if ceased prior to around 1935.
2) There are a large number of citizenships mentioned, which were gained after 1875.

Back to Sattler:

The thread Namen in alten Kirchenbüchern des Kantons Schaffhausen lists names mentioned in church records of Schaffhausen (canton) parishes, mostly covering the time before 1700. Sattler shows up in the city of Schaffhausen and the community of Siblingen.

Any advice will depend a lot on the time frame of your research: give some detail (names, years, ...) of what you know already - as starting point of further reserach.

Hi
Wolf, you gave me information, pointing out that the Sattler name appears in the region of Schaffhousen, the time frame indicated was 1540 - 1700. Also I am looking at the Sattler name being in other regions, as have said from Baden Aargu, Basel to name a couple. From my records of the same time frame, I could be looking at the children of the descendants moving to these areas.
By earlier posts that I have written, a reply I have had, has indicated that what I hold is for all the Sattlers, of the village of Baar of Zug. So I am needing to look at these other regions. What I am trying to get is hopefully someone to either direct me to a listing or site that may hold these names, and then maybe I can attempt to cross reference them with what I hold, thus 4 me finding the link to trace Sattler back thru Austria and Germany etc.

Cheers Gloria

Sattler is a surname derived from a profession - these surnames very often were generated independently for families which were not related at all.

Pre-1800 citizenships (and lines still thriving today) were
- Müswangen LU
- Visperterminen VS (whih is NOT the same as Visp!)
- Baar ZG.
In this thread only Sattler in canton Schaffhausen should be discussed - otherwise it will become too confusing.

As far as 1700 is concerned: church records were extracted up to this date - which does not tell us for how much longer Sattler show up in these two parishes.

BTW - you still did not give an (at least roughly estimated) year when the Sattlers, you are looking for, might have left Switzerland.

Hi Wolf
Thank you for your help thus far.
As have stated the regions I was talking of appear in a story, to do with the Sattlers, dating back 1504, but I was interested to know which regions had Sattler families residing in, not just necessarily Sattler as name, because of the noted occupation. (am well aware the name came in conjunction of this way).

As in the case of the Sattlers that have left Switzerland, and immigrated to the varying countries, e.g. 1912 Emil Sattler and his brothers, lived in Baar, Zug, I am connected to this line, and hold information, on all except the sisters that were left behind, and 1901/1905 these Sattlers are descendants of Christoph Sattler and Verena Suter. Christoph b. 1764 - d. 1840. This couple had 7 children. My line via their 4th child, (1901/1905) via their 7th and last child.
There was also another Sattler that has immigrated to NZ 1875, John August Sattler, by what I hold he came from Switzerland, but thru searching have discovered he lived in Austria for many years. He has distant relatives in Canada.

But my main thing is still to try and find a link that ties all these Sattler families as one, and also ties them migrating from Germany to Austria to Switzerland.

So as have been saying, looking for anyone and anything that can help me with that quest.

Gloria

Dear Gloria,

today I quickly checked the site "www.stadtarchiv-schaffhausen.ch", then went to "Genalogie-Seiten" (Genalogy pages), further to "Bürgerbuch der Stadt Schaffhausen" (registry of persons who became citizens and paid their dues) and went to the charakter "S". 3 Sattlers are mentioned.

Afterwards I searched briefly the 3 Schaffhausen "Stadtgenealogien" (published in the Mormon site) but I did not find any "Sattler"; this could indicate that in the Schaffhausen townschip, at the time when Bartenschlager wrote down the first "Genealogy" (around the year 1800) the "Sattler" name was aleady extinguished (in the townschip of Schaffhausen - not automatically in villages around Schaffhausen !!).

As I am busy with other projects I will not pursue the "Schaffhausen" and "Sattler" question any further. Check yourself whether the LDS (Mormon) church has microfilms of Siblingen.

As mentioned the "Swiss Historical Lexicon" site lists a few Sattler.

With the best regards from Canada

Henry

Hi Henry,
I thank you so much for your assistance.
I will do as you suggest and try investigating further from my end.
I am so grateful for the help, being that I not overly familiar with the language, and from reading other posts, you people have been doing this a lot longer than myself. It is nice to get help from other parts of the world.

Thanks Gloria

Hi Gloria,

here we go again. I have another interesting information for you; regarding the Sattler family. In the village book Die Ahnen des deutschen Volkes, Baden, Konstanz, Büsingen. Published in 1939. I found on page 192 under the No. 1729 the following information:

No: 1729
*04.04.1641 Martin Sattler (Father Martin Sattler from Stetten/Baden °° with Agnes ....)

It mentions the birth of Martin Sattler in Büsingen a.H
