Merci beaucoup Dena for the link to the archives website! Unfortunately, I don't know French so will have to see if I can locate someone to translate for me.

Re: Andermann from Alsace Lorraine
More info on Antoine:
1849 He designed & built original St Mary’s chapel on the river road in Union, Louisiana. He may have lived on church property and/or been employed by St Michael’s catholic parish in Convent, Louisiana as carpenter? 1858 Story is that he (working with/for Sam Fagot of Uncle Sam plantation) fell from church steeple (in St John’s parish?) and died the following day(s)

Re: Swiss ancestor Andermann
Andermann ist not listed in the Swiss Family name registers. There are families living in South Germany, and in Silesia. Are you sure he was born in Switzerland?
Family search lists one Anton Andermann, born in 1813 in Prussia, living in St. John, La Grange, Indiana, spouse Anna, children Anna (11 y) and Anton (8 y). Could this be him in a second marriage?
You should try to find as much as possible from his life in America, to get some hint about any specific place in Europe. This would increase your chances, which are close to none without it.
Good luck!

Re: Andermann in der Schweiz (?)
So the Andermann in Indiana is not my guy
My Andermann who lived in Louisiana was said to be of Swiss origin from Alsace Lorraine which I understand is a region that has transferred back & forth between France & Germany.
I found an Antoine Andermatt who arrived in New York near the time that his wife Katterlet arrived - perhaps, change in spelling of last name?

Latest update:
I found an Antoine Andermatt that arrived in New York in June 1834 which is one month prior to when Katterlet (later his wife in Louisiana) arrived. Records indicate that he was approx 28 which would put his birth in about 1806 instead.

Re: Andermann in der Schweiz (?)
They had one son Ernest, born 1839 New Orleans, died 1926 in Union, St. James, Louisiana. The 1900 and 1920 census gives both him and his parents to be born in Louisiana. He had a son named Antoine, born 1888.
What seems odd to me - despite trying different spellings, I could not find them prior to 1900, neither any other Andermann in Louisiana. Did you? It might be a hint for the original name to find the spellings they were registered by in the preceeding census lists. And to see what birthplace is given for Antoine sen.
In Alsace, Lorraine, and neighbouring parts of Germany, Napoleon had established civil registers, starting from 1793. Those of Alsace are even online. But it would be essential to find an exact location, unless you want to go through dozends of communities and check if any Andermann or sound-alike names are listed.

Re: Andermann in der Schweiz (?)
corrections:
Antoine Anderman ist listed in 1840 at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XHTD-PB2, but no further dates or family
one more familie in 1860 in St. James, Louisiana, of Wm. A. (?Antoine?) Anderman, born 1818 in ?Belfist?
So St. James, Louisiana seems to be the place to check and see if any additional infos might turn up. Maybe you found them in 1850, 1870 and 1880?

Re: Andermann in der Schweiz (?)
YES, I am a descendant of Ernest Andermann!!
We have details about his branch of our family tree & down/forward but where we hit a wall is when trying to go further up/back with his father Antoinne
Let me share what we do know from Louisiana records:
Antoinne M Andermann
Born in Alsace Lorraine
The first record that we have is his marriage to Hortense Katterlet (from Belfort, France) in May 1835 at St Mary catholic church in New Orleans, Louisiana
They had 8 children all born in Louisiana
1836 Marie Emelina
1838 AUGUSTINE ERNEST
1841 Justine Hermance
1843 Emilia Hortensia
1848 Victor Emile
1849 Emma Theresa
1852 Edouard Marcellin
1854 Francis Antoinne
He designed & built the original St Mary’s chapel on the river road in Union, Louisiana in 1849
1850 census records (spelled Andremann) indicate that he was from Germany. He may have lived on church property and/or been employed by St Michael’s catholic parish in Convent, Louisiana
Story is that in Oct 1858, he (working with/for Sam Fagot of Uncle Sam plantation) fell (from church steeple?) and died the following day(s). We found an article in St John’s parish newspaper about the death of both men. We had it translated from French & it stated that he was a SWISS man. The same article also indicated that he was 55 years old which would perhaps put his birth in 1803 instead?. He is buried in St Michael’s catholic cemetery in St James parish, Louisiana
He was dead prior to 1860 census so the trail ends……
Thank you so much for all your help & research in trying to find the missing piece of the puzzle

Re: Andermann in der Schweiz (?)
So you seem to have dug out already what I might find on the American side.
What might be a trace - Hortense came from Belfort, France. For that William Anderman, residing in 1860 in St. James, Belfist is given as birthplace. If you have a chance to check the orignal list, maybe it would turn out to be errously transcribed for Belfort? If that William was a relative of Antoine or not, you would at least have the name showing at a distinct place in France. Belfort is neighbouring to Alsace-Lorraine.
Concerning the Swiss origin of the name - there are several surnames, starting with In der, with would sound from French tongues somehow like Under. One is Indermauer, appearing in Cantons Zürich, Argau and Sankt Gallen in Northern Switzerland. With some phantasy, this could sound like Undermoe.
A crazy hypothesis is better than none, sometimes. Hope you find better hints!

Re: Andermann from Alsace Lorraine
I found the surname ANDERMATT in 1836 Alsace census within the cantons of Brumath, Schiltigheim, and Truchtersheim which would be after my ancester left the county (since married in America in 1835) but perhaps these folks could have been relatives? However, there is no way to view first names or any further details - any suggestions?

I am searching for my ANDERMANN ancestor as well. Story is that he also had a brother who immigrated to America but unfortunately, we do not know his first name. Supposedly, his brother went North & he stayed in the South. My German ancestor is:

He married Hortense Katterle (from Belfort, France) in 1835 at St Mary’s catholic church in New Orleans, Louisiana - no parents name on marriage record
1840 Louisiana census in St James parish list 2 adult males (perhaps my guy + his brother) + 1 adult female (his wife) + 2 children (his son + daughter) - no first names were documented that year

Andermatt in der Schweiz
I am researching my Swiss ancestor Antoine Andermatt
Born 1803 or 1813 in Switzerland
Immigrated June 1834 to America as passenger on ship Henry IV from Havre, France
Married 1835 Hortense Karterlet (from Belfort, France) in New Orleans, Louisiana
Died 1858 in Louisiana
Unfortunately, neither marriage nor death record indicates parent's name
I found surname ANDERMATT in Swiss genealogy register originating from Baar
There is a Karl Anton Andermatt from 1775-1832 - could he be a relative of my Antoine?
Any leads or guidance that you can provide is appreciated!
thanks,
Laurie
