Welcome to the forum, Alexandra :) !

There is no simple answer to your question, though. Kunz are spreading over almost all German speaking regions of Switzerland - check The Register of Swiss Surnames yourself.

How you can start your research in Switzerland depends heavily on what you know already - in other words: you have to give us some information, before we can try to give you an answer.

Do you already have information from Swiss sources - or shipping lists / US census data / ... only?
What is the name of your earliest known ancestor, when (at least guesstimated) was (s)he born?
Do you know his place of citizenship (most important) or at least place of birth / marriage / ...?

You'll find some additional info on the Introduction to Swiss Genealogy: hasn't been updates for a long time - but much of it is still valid.

Max Kunz born 20 Nov 1920 in Langnau I'm Emmental, Bern, Switzerland who died about 2009 (we aren't exactly sure when) in Steinach, St. Gallen, Switzerland. He married Ursula Brand on 16 Dec 1948 in Leimbach, Kulm, Aargau, Switzerland. Max and Ursula had 4 children, Max Jr, Ursula Jr,, Martin and Peter.
Ursula was born 18 Jun 1925 in Stammheim, Zurich, Switzerland and died 19 May 1978 Kreuzlingen, Thurgau, Switzerland.
and it looks like the canton is st.gallen
this is what i have so far

Let me start with a short organisational aspect: we discuss only single families (defined by name and place of citizenship) in any single topic. Related (e.g. by marriage) families are discussed in separate topics - these topics can be linked to each other. I have started a new topic on Brand and recommend you "subscribe" to this topic (to be informed by mail each time a response is posted there).

You will not find any information on Max Kunz (*1920) on any official web site, and the chances that a reader of this forum knows about him is extremely dim. So your only realistic chance to get on with your research is to contact the Civil Registry Office of Langnau im Emmental, his place of birth, the Zivilstandsamt Emmental. Max Kunz's birth will be registered there - but Langnau is not the "Bürgerort" (place of citizenship) of his parents. Ask there whether they will give you his parents' "Bürgerort" - or what you have to do (and pay) to get this info. Once you have this info - let us now.

Only the KUNZ family should be discussed here.
