Buss im Kanton Thurgau

Searching for details of my maternal great grandfather, thought to have died in Thurgau.

Karl Franz August Constantin BUSS born Feb 1859, the son of Augusta Antonia (Konig) + Johann Friedrich August BUSS.

Karl was married to Zurich born Barbara Rosa GUBLER in 1888, and they lived in Lancashire, England for a time, where they had 6 children. They do not appear on the 1901 UK census, and are known to have been in Arbon around 1916.

Any help or information most gratefully received.

As Karl Franz August Constantin Buss and his wife were not Swiss citizens, they had to be registered with the administration of their place of living. And if he died in Switzerland, his death will be registered at the place of death. There is no central register.

You mention Arbon: you could contact the Thurgau State Archive and ask what sources they have available - and whether they could check whether they find anything on Karl Franz August Constantin Buss in Arbon.

Both Karl and his wife Barbara were entered as Swiss born on the 1891 Uk census, so I will contact the Thurgau State Archive to enquire, and hope they are able to help me.

You have to be aware that "Swiss born" and "Swiss citizen" means two completely different situations. As far as his wife is concerned: even if she was possibly a Swiss citizen by birth - she lost this citizenship by getting married to a foreigner.
