Kopp in Assenheim

Beitrag von Debra Palmer » Fr 20. Okt 2023, 05:31

I'm helping a friend research her ancestors in Hessen. The attached baptismal entry year 1814 is for Anna Margareth Kopp in Assenheim.
I transcribed some parts of the entry but would appreciate help to finish the transcription and translate the meaning correctly.

I think the main part translates as:
Anna Margareth who is the daughter of Jacob Kopp (deceased), had a child named Anna Margareth born out of wedlock on 22 March 1814. The mother does not give the name the father who is French.
The note in the margin mentions that the child Anna Margareth died on 26 Feb 1889 and was buried on 28 Feb 1889 (I assume this was also in Assenheim).

What are the names of the witnesses?

Source: Assenheim (Kr. Friedberg), Taufregister, year 1814, entry 3. There is no URL for the image.
The second image is the full page.

Thank you,
Debra

Thank you very much, Francoise for the translation.

Unfortunately, the names of the child's father and mother are not mentioned. It's interesting though, that there is information in the entry that the father is in the French military.

I'm unsure about the meaning of "Illegitimate daughter of the deceased Jacob KOPP". Is this referring to the mother? If I understand the translation correctly, Jacob KOPP is the grandfather of the child Anna Margaretha?

I found a baptismal and marriage entry for an "Anna Elisabeth Kopp" in Assenheim who is the daughter of Jacob Kopp and Catharina Marie. I think this could be the same person as the witness because the groom in the marriage entry is "Johann Heinrich Gondolf", and that matches the name of the witness' husband. I'll post these two records and some other ones that I found, which I think may possibly confirm the name of the child's mother.

No, Jacob Kopp is the deceased father of the child.

I don't know where you found the certificate. You just have to go back through the birth until you get to the marriage, then you know who the mother was.

This is indeed a bit confusing with two identical names:
1) Born on 22 March 1814 is an illegitimate child Anna Margareth.
2) Her mother is also Anna Margareth.
3) The mother is the daughter of the late Jacob Kopp.
So Jacob Kopp is the grandfather of the child born on 22 March 1814. The father of the child is not mentioned.
Best regards - Wolf

I scanned microfilm of the baptismal entry for Anna Margareth at a Mormon research center, also known as the FamilySearch Library (formerly the Family History Library).

That is a good suggestion to find the marriage of Jacob Kopp and I found a marriage for a Johann Jacob Kopp and Catharina Marie Ehwald on 7 September 1775 in Assenheim, that is a possible match. See post below.

If you are interested, the familysearch PID for Anna Margaretha Kopp is MX6N-ZHH.

Regards,
Debra

Thank you so much for the translation and I agree that the baptismal entry is a bit confusing! So I searched not only for Jacob Kopp's marriage and death, but also for the records of: his wife i.e. baptism and death, the mother Anna Margareth i.e. baptism and death, and the child Anna Margareth i.e. marriage and death. See the death entry of a Jacob Kopp below. I will post the records later for Jacob Kopp's wife, the mother Anna Margareth and the child Anna Margareth.

Marriage entry of Johann Jacob Kopp and Catharina Marie Ehwald. Source: Assenheim (Hessen), Eheregister, year 1775, entry 2.
I think this is possibly the marriage of the grandfather in Anna Margareth's baptismal entry.

I can't read a few words and would appreciate help to finish the translation.

[entry 2] den 7ten Septembr. sind Johann Jacob Kopp ?
und Cathar. Marie Ehwaldin copulirt ?.

On the 7th of September [year 1775], Johann Jacob Kopp ? and Catharina Marie Ehwald were married.

Edit: I took a second look at the entry and figured out that the two words after the name Johann Jacob Kopp are "von Ossenheim" (not von Assenheim). So Jacob was from Ossenheim and married Catharina in Assenheim.

Question: what is the word after copulirt?

Death entry of Jacob Kopp. Source: Assenheim (Hessen), Totenregister, year 1812, entry 12.
This is possibly the death entry of Jacob Kopp who was married in 1775 and may be the same Jacob Kopp mentioned in Anna Margareth's baptismal entry.

The entry is difficult to read and I would appreciate help with the transcription and translation.

[entry] 12 den 19 Novembr. [year 1812] Am ? Jocob Kopp ?

Edit: I gave it a try to transcribe and translate the entry. Here it goes:

[entry] 12
ten19 Novembr. [year 1812] Am Neunzehnte? Novembr. des Jahres ? [1800?] und
zwölf, abend um 8 uhr ? 6 der hiesige Bürger und
Stittme?, ? Meister Jacob Kopp Ehegefährte Jahre
alt ? und ? am ? und ?
? der Stille begraben.

On the 19th of November 1812 in the evening around 8 o'clock ?, the local person and citizen ? master Jacob Kopp (who was married) died, aged ?, he was quietly buried.
