Flückiger von Auswil BE (2)
Greetings: I am searching for relatives who were Anabaptists, name of Fluckiger (Flickinger). They were originally from Rohrbach by Huttwil, Canton Bern. The family lived south of the Rhein River near Basel. Any details about Anabaptist communities will be helpful.
The time frame was 1680 - 1750. Thank you for any leads that you can provide.

Re: Basel Anabaptists and Flickingers
Hi Robin
If you search for "Flückiger" on this site, you will come by a few threads about Flückiger from Rohrbach and Huttwil. In Switzerland, the most relevant lead for genealogy research is actually the "Heimatort" which, for your Flückigers, seems to be Rohrbach / Huttwil in the canton of Berne.
The church records of the canton of Berne are online so you can review them on the homepage of the archive of the canton of Berne. http://www.query.sta.be.ch/suchinfo.aspx, search for "Kirchenbücher Huttwil". As your ancestors were anabaptists, you might not be lucky with the "Taufrodel" (baptism records) if they were not baptized or did not baptize their children. However, there are also marriage and death records so perhaps you find something - provided you can read old German handwriting that is...
Another good idea might be to contact the good folk at http://en.bienenberg.ch/. It's a center of anabaptist theology and they do have archives and could probably help you with your research.
Good luck with your research!

Re: Basel Anabaptists and Flickingers
Robin,
to untangle genealogies of Swiss anabaptists is a challenge, because of their migrations, the same first names showing in each family, the multiple "cross-marriages" within fellow-believers, and most of all the incredible number of descendents. You will find many Flückiger individuals in Bernese churchbooks, could trace some families over few generations, and get hints about one or another Anabaptist namesake. In regard of searching YOUR relatives, it would be more promising to post what you have about the individual that lived near Basel, such as name, estimated age, spouse, period of emmigration ...
Anabaptist communities 1680-1750 are a rather wide-ranging matter, too. Some remained in Bernese cantons, major congregations exsisted around today's Swiss/French/German border, or on both sides of the Rhine river further up - not to mention early AB settlers in Pennsylvania. There are endless books and internet publications for general infos. I could answer some questions, on amateur level, send a PM if you are interested.
Good luck!

Re: Basel Anabaptists and Flickingers
Hi Robin,
you wrote that "your" anabaptist Flückiger families lived "south of the Rhein River near Basel" between 1680 an 1750. In my large data collection about Basel anabaptists these folks don't show up. But "near Basel" might be beyond the Basel territory in the strict sense, e.g. in the Bishopric further southwest, or further south beyond the Basel borders e.g. in the canton of Solothurn or the northeastern edge of the canton of Bern.
Joe Springer in his monumental study about the Montbéliard Mennonite Church Registers (Vol2, p676) indeed mentions an Ulrich Flückiger oo Katharina Kennel who moved from Attiswil (Bernese territory, 35 south of Basel, cf. http://www.hls-dhs-dss.ch/textes/d/D557.php) to Montbéliard ca. 1752.
Might this be "your" line?
Greetings,
hpj

Re: Peter Flückiger
It is some years later and I am happy to say that the immigrant Peter Flickinger, year 1753 to Pennsylvania, is listed in FamilySearch.org
with locations! He is listed as having been born in Herzogenbuchsee and then baptized in Rohrbach bei Huttwil on 13 August, 1730. There are several options for his father, Durs Flückiger. One born in 1699, another in 1706 and one more in 1708. His mother is listed as Anna Hess.
I am attempting to straighten out his FS tree, and properly connect him as a likely nephew to immigrant Ulrich F of Lauperswil. Lots of people and details to attempt to understand. The reason I mention immigrant Ulrich F as a close relative is that here in 2024, I continue to have a surprisingly high number of autosomal and yDNA relatives that link the two men.
Thank you to Wolf and the other researchers who have weighed in on this topic! It is difficult when the place names are never mentioned in the passed down stories within the families! Glad I had the excuse to visit the wonderful city of Basel!! We are visiting CH in September and plan to see Solothurn, as it looks old and interesting, and will go to Herzogenbuchsee and Seeburg just to explore them.
It seems that Peter F had some siblings, so I am attempting to trace their families.
As always, I am interested in your feedback! Thank you so much, Robin Flickinger Gaynor in Arlington, WA USA

Re: Basel Anabaptists and Flickingers
Your recent find (Peter Flickinger listed in FamilySearch) confirms what John Doh suggested in 2018. Huttwill churchbooks are online, good chance to clarify the question about Peter's siblings. But you will probably face the usual challenges in reagard of Anabaptist genealogies, namely to first place untangle the various families recorded in the parishes where they lived generations before any events were registered, and even more, to trace specific individual that emigrated.
Good luck anyway!

Thank you, Walter, for the clarification: I have renamed the topic and shifted it to BE.
There was already a topic Flückiger von Auswil BE (1). Usually I would merge topics - but here we had already two longish discussion, chronologically overlapping - so I decided to keep them separate (for the time being).

Vielen dank fur alles!! Thank you for weighing in on this old and now new topic. I posted it in the prior location so as to get the attention of people who had read this.
I apologize that I am not well versed on using Geneal-Forum. I am very grateful for the opinions and the posts that are generated!! Thank you so much.
I will attempt to sort out which Peter is "mine". Robin Flickinger Gaynor

Hello again, Walter:
Your image is great! Thank you. Do you understand why the name Zimmerman is in the record? Also, do you see the mother's name? I can make out some of the script (with your help) but I do not understand it all.
You are very helpful!! Thank you! We are visiting Herzogenbuchsee next month. Robin

you asked Walter, but I guess he should agree:
- Zimmermann in the record of Peter's baptism is no surname, but the father's trade/profession (carpenter)
- mother's name is Anna Heß

Aug 2024, 21:43 I would love for you to weigh in on this church record.

Januar 1730 in Herzogenbuchsee (Rodel 6, Seite 227, siehe Anhang).

September 1732 (Rodel 6, Seite 200)
- Hans, getauft am 19. Juni 1735 (Rodel 6, Seite 202)
Diese Taufen wurden auch in Rohrbach im Taufrodel 5 notiert (Elsbeth: Seite 293 / Hans: Seite 298)
I can't find any indication that they were Anabaptists!

Vielen Dank fur alles, Walter!!
You have gone above and beyond with your help for me. I am getting a more clear picture of where ancestor Peter Flueckiger was from.
I have been to Auswil several times, and so will explore Peter's family roots there.
Also, Anna Hess being from Niederönz is so interesting. We will also visit there next month.
What joy to learn more!!

Your help is wonderul! It is so encouraging to have an expert reading what I am attempting to understand.
Yes, I went once to Fluckigen in 2007! I walked from Huttwil past the sawmill, along the fence edges. I saw a cow give birth to a calf! It was so special. I spoke with a person living there who was connected to the Rutmatteli side of the Flueckigers. So wonderful. I need to speak with someone who knows the local family lines... if you have ideas about that, I would be grateful.
Hope all is well in Basel. I loved Basel in 2007 and 2012!! A favorite city for me.
Danke,
Robin
