Caluori von Domat/Ems GR

Beitrag von PeterCHanson » Do 6. Nov 2025, 05:04

Laurenz Caluori (1828-1898) was born in Ems and migrated to Altdorf/Uri around 1850. His father was Johann Peter Caluori (1804-1839). His father was Georg Peter Caluori (abt 1780 Ems). I have not found earlier ones, but Jörg, Federspiel, Theus, Willi, Cabiallaveta, and Christoffel marry into the branch. Our family notes (unsubstantiated) was that a predecessor for Caluori was Lorenzo, who was an Italian nobleman who pilgrimaged to the Rhäzüns area; I don't know if that is true. I have been told Caluori was in Bonaduz prior to Domat/Ems. In searching Domat/Ems wappen book, I found that the Caluori entry noted a Peter Caluori was Landamman of Hochgerichtes Rhäzüns in 1712, and a Jacob Caluori was bailiff in 1687. I wanted to search more for this Peter. Recently I found records (I had to use Google Translator since I do not know German...sorry) that had to do with Stathalter Matthias Candrian purchasing the estate of Peter Caluori from his heirs around 1766, and Anton von Salis-Soglio and Cardinal Alessandro Albani (in Rome) had much correspondence and involvement in getting payment from Candrian to the heirs of Caluori.

Since I am translating this document in pieces (link below), I am not sure if I understand the full scenario. I believe the document notes the heirs were residents of Rome. Does anyone have connections to this family and know of relation between this Peter Caluori and my Georg Peter? Any thoughts as to why the heirs would be in Rome (if that is true)? And anyone know why the Cardinal in Rome would be interested in what seemed to be a "local" issue? (I know it states Peter was from Bonaduz, but I'm not sure if the land in question was there or Chur...it seems plausible to me that this was in Chur/League of God's House and maybe the Cardinal was overseeing issues that were within the Bishopric...or maybe the heirs were in the service of the Cardinal). Any help is appreciated.

Peter Caluori from Bonaduz had apparently emigrated to Rome, perhaps as an artist or specialized craftsman working for the Pope (pure speculation on my part). That could explain why Cardinal Albani took care of Peter's legacy. You would probably need to study the letters listed in the PDF under 2.1 nbr 1 and 2 to find out more about this family.

Thank you for the reply and question, Wolf. Yes, this Peter is related to the Domat/Ems GR family. Much of my older information comes from a family letter written in 1976. We have a plate with a crest painted on it and text that notes it was the wappen of Laurenz Caluori, bürger of Ems, Graubünden per the memberboard of the Bierbrauer-Brüderschaft Museum established in Altdorf, Kanton Uri in 1804. Laurenz was born in 1828 in Ems (to Johann Peter Caluori and Maria Anna Elisabeth Theus) and married Anna Marie Zwyssig (from Seedorf UR) in May 1857. I found an Altdorf listing indicating he had settled there in 1858. He was a nailsmith like his father, and elected Föhnwachtmeister in 1884. Peter, born June 1857, was their son. Zwyssig, also with Bissig and Muther ties, had been in Uri for a long time). I do not know why records don't list Peter as citizen, but he was born there (we thought), and lived on Gottardstrasse across from Gasthaus Kreuz (we have photos of the house/general store...it was demolished in 1956 to widen the roadway). Besides being a general store owner, he was what appears to be an Emigration Agent or salesman from 1911-1920 at the Altdorf "branch" of Rommel & Cie. He was also in the Brotherhood of St. Barbara in Altdorf and kirchenvogt in 1920. I believe he died 15 Feb 1932 in Altdorf. I did find a 1908 newspaper which noted Peter was originally from Ems and owned a business in Altdorf specializing in hardware and window glass, but I always thought the birthplace was incorrect since it seemed everything after 1857 occurred in Altdorf. I'm sorry if I provided too much info...the Catherina Caluori-Senn I noted in my original post in the SZ forum was born 2 Feb 1855 in Brunnen-Ingenbohl and died 12 Jan 1823 in Altdorf.

As I read what I wrote, I realized something about Peter's birth. I know it was only a month after his parent's marriage, but figured this was a "rushed" marriage. I have a marriage date of 27 May 1857 for them. At this point I cannot tell the source...and perhaps Altdorf was only assumed because of where Anna Marie was from. Peter was born 29 Jun 1857, and again I'm not certain of source. Perhaps the newspaper was correct that he was born in Ems and the family did not actually move to Altdorf until 1858. Is one a citizen of the town in which they are born, even if they only live their for a year? That seems to fit with your comment that Caluori is not shown as citizenship in Altdorf URI!

You find a short description of the principle of Swiss citizenship on https://kunden.eye.ch/swissgen/CH-burger-e.html: the location where someone is born may be the place of citizenship - but doesn't have to be; the location where someone lives may be the place of citizenship - but doesn't have to be. You "inherit" your father's citizenship by birth - and most people keep it for all their life, irrespective of where they live.

This is also the basis of the structure of the topics in the Swiss forums here - see viewtopic.php?f=49&t=366#p906 and viewtopic.php?t=31416. Consequently your last two contributions, dealing only with Caluori of Ems, have been shifted to the corresponding topic.
