Olsen in Zürich ZH

Not really a genealogical question, but related!

My Norwegian maternal grandfather, Ole Olsen, studied, and possibly worked, in Zurich for some time around 1896 +/- 3 years. He probably studied Engineering and/or Brewing/Distillation. When he returned to Norway in 1899 he took over the running of his father's distillery. I have written to the Techniche Hochschule in Zurich to see if they have any records from that time that may help to identify where and what he studied, but with a negative response.

I recently learnt that, while my grandfather was in Zurich, he was one year the flag/banner bearer for the 1st May parade in Zurich and I was wondering if there possibly could be a picture of this in a Zurich newspaper on the 2nd May? So my question is what would be the most likely newspaper to approach to see if there are any records from the 1893 - 1899 period?Are the possibly any on-line archives to be consulted?

Sorry to post in English, but my German or French is not good enough to post, but I can read German and French if that is easier for you to post.

You might contact the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung“ (www.nzz.ch), which has the on of the best archives, but articles from about 1900 aren't online, of course.

Good luck! By the way, I couldn't find Ole Olsen in the list of students at Zurich in the 19th century, either.

I am re-activating this thread as I have not made any progress in locating my grandfather, Ole Olsen, in Zurich, or anywhere else in Switzerland or Germany in the last 18 months.

I wrote to Neue Zurcher Zeitung, but I never received an answer from them. But next week I am possibly visiting Zurich and I will call at their office to see if I have any more luck. Which other publication and/or library should I try for locating Zurich papers for 2nd May 1896, 97, 98 and 99?

Have you seen http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_Schw ... _Zeitungen. The Tagesanzeiger was founded 2 March 1893.
