Schellenberg im Kanton Zürich

I'm writing from Argentina, I'm searching information of my family.
My greatgreatgrandfather, August Schellenberg was born in Zell in Wiesental, Baden. He was son of Georg or Johann Georg or Georg Johann, born in Ried bei Zürich, CHE, 18 july of 1819 / 1820. He married in Schopfheim, Baden, and died in Atzenbach.
Georg was son of Johann Heinrich Schellenberg and Verena Hauser.
I will thank any information about them.

Schellenberg is a quite common name in Kanton Zürich: since before 1800 citizenships are held in

Many of these lines have been researched by Billeter.

The question is: where is this Ried bei Zürich? There is no independent community Ried in Kanton Zürich, all I find is a Ried bei Gibswil.

It doesn't seem to be trivial to chase this Georg Schellenberg - otherwise the family tree on http://www.my-roots.org/persons/D/11304.php wouldn't stop with him.

Adrián Arnold (in Argentinien) sucht nach Informationen zu seinem UrUrUrgrossvater (Johann) Georg Schellenberg, *18.07.1820 (oder 1819) in Ried bei Zürich, als Sohn von Johann Heinrich Schellenberg und Verena Hauser.
Der Sohn August wird in Zell in Wiesental (Baden) geboren. Er heiratet in Schopfheim (Baden) und verstirbt in Atzbach.

Oben werden die seit vor 1800 bestehenden Bürgerorte für Schellenberg aufgeführt. Mehrere dieser Linien wurden von Billeter erforscht.

Thanks for the german translation and for the data.
The Ried bei Zürich location source is a book (I don´t remember now the author) of german surnames, property of Michael Gebhardt (http://www.my-roots.org/persons/D/11304.php ). The Michael info of the descendents it's mine, and in the case of ascestries, his research was made in an independent way of my research and both are more or less the same. In my info I had Riet-Zürich, in the surnames book is Ried bei Zürich.
I don´t know Zürich (I suppose that you know it a little better that me), but in "guía michelín" I found a Ried near Pfäffikon, but it doesn't mean anything without more data.
An additional datum, in the dead acta of Augusto Schellenberg here in Franck, it say that the born location was Zürich, that was a mistake... or perhaps not, if he maintain his "heimatort" in Zürich, is it possibly? I've verifed his actual born place and it was Zell in Wiesental (Germany).

There are two data sets for the Register of Swiss Surnames - one compiled around 1935 (and published 1940), another one compiled 1962 (and published in several editions).

According to the 1989 edition (as of 1962) Schellenberg gained citizenship of Zürich during the 19th century. But now I also checked the 1940 edition - and this lists Zürich as citizenship since before 1800! So it would be quite possible that your line held citizenship of the city of Zürich.

I know of several occasions where German documents mix up place of citizenship (which is not known in a similar way in Germany) and place of birth.

The Ried bei Gibswil mentioned in my posting above is less than 15 km from Pfäffikon - possibly the same Ried than yours.

I didn't consider the spellings Riedt/Riet though: there are several Riedt in canton Zürich, no Riet in my list of communities. It might well be that any of these spellings might denote a former small village which has by now been incorporated into the city of Zürich. Someone with a better knowledge of the local history of Zürich than me might be able to tell you. I just found a Riedhof now belonging to Zürich.

Riedt gehört meines wissens zur Gemeinde Neerach ZH (ein kleiner Weiler). Am besten könnte Dir das Staatsarchiv Zürich über die gesuchten Personen Auskunft geben oder weiterhelfen.

Das Buch “Zürcher Familiennamen“ erwähnt explizit Schellenberg von Riedt bei Neerach um 1650/1660 (früher Ober-Steinmaur).
