Dill im Kanton Basel BL

Beitrag von A.Dil » Mo 25. Mai 2009, 12:37

Dear All

I am trying to trace my DIL / DILL line back to Switzerland.

I have Theodorus DILL b. c. 1780, in Bazel. (Birth date unclear from records I have. One record suggests he died in 1834 aged 54)

His wife is Anna SCHALELING (or perhaps SCHABELING or SCHADDELEE - different spellings are seen).

Their daughter Anna Maria is born 1809 in Dordrecht, Holland.

I think that Theodorus parents are Josep DILL and Anna SCHOBINGER.

Any ideas on how to proceed are very welcome!

Anton

DILL in Basel

Beitrag von Kraehe » Mo 25. Mai 2009, 14:59

Hallo Anton,

Could you please be more specific about the archives you searched in the Netherlands? What do you know about this Theodorus Dill? I searched quickly www.cbg.nl, www.genlias.nl and ww.soldaten-genealogie.nl and got the impression that your Theodorus had a daughter, with at least one illegitimate child. The Familyname Dill exists in Basel (as citizens) since 1833 (Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz). I don't know whether the Dill family has been searched in Switzerland.

Regards,

Bernard Krijbolder

P.S. Coetzee de Villiers searched a Dill family in South Africa

According to Familiennamenbuch Dill gained citizenship of the city of Basel in 1833 and later - all originating from different communities in canton Basel-Landschaft, where they held citizenship since before 1800: Arisdorf, Binningen, Langenbruck, Pratteln.

So - your Theodorus may have been born in the city of Basel - but most likely the family was from one of those 4 communities.

Possible correct spellings (today!) for his wife could be Schelling, Schilling, Schädeli, Schädelin (to name the most likely ones) - none holding citizenship in Basel-Landschaft - but in neighbouring cantons.

Schobinger were most likely from Hallau (Schaffhausen) - alternatively from cantons Luzern, Thurgau or St.Gallen.

Dear All

Thank you for your replies... First of all, I am really ignorant of how things operate (or operated) in Switzerland, so it is interesting to hear about gaining citizenship of the city of Bazel.

My earliest Dil at the moment is Theodorus. In fact, in his records the name is Dill, and then in later generations the second L drops off one line of the family (and probably continues in other lines).

The Dordrecht archive index shows two children of Theodorus and Anna, namely Anna and Huiberdina

http://www.archieven.nl/pls/m/zk2.zoek_ ... _adt_id=46

However, they have sent me a scan of the page, and the index seems wrong. Huiberdina is not their child, but Anna Maria is theirs, and baptised Sept 1, 1809 (b. Aug 26th, so presumably born in Holland).

I have followed them back to Doredrecht from Breda in Holland, where Anna Maria has several children outside of marriage. Theodorus and Anna are 'werksters', workers - which is also mentioned in the Dordrecht archives, though I have not seen the originals of that at Dordrecht yet.

The record that leads me to Switzerland is Theodorus' death record in Breda, which is here

http://www.stadsarchief.breda.nl/index. ... sub=detail

And this one mentions Josep (as far as I can see) Dill and Anna Schobinger.

Also it says Theodorus is "geboren te Bazel, in Zwitserland" and that's all I know really...

(I think there are also some records I haven't explored here

http://www.isis.breda.nl/SISIS.DLL/vond ... rt=&woord=

but for the moment I can't see the relationship of these names to the ones I've mentioned.)

I think Theodorus' wife's name may well begin Schad.... if this record is related!

http://www.isis.breda.nl/SISIS.DLL/vond ... rt=&woord=

Hard to know... Not an obvious link anyway

Regards
Anton

Hallo Anton,

I did some research for you. Enclosed please find the death records of Theodorus dill and Anna Schaddelee (origin of this name also Swiss: Schaedeli(n); they descend of a Conrad S., a soldier in a Bernese- and later a Zuerich-regiment, born early 18th century). From that records (I suppose you know Dutch) it is obvious that Theodorus (probably Theodor) was in born, most likely in the town of Basel CH. For the place of his Swiss citizenship, please see Wolf's comments. At the time of his death he was a Ziekenoppasser ( = ancient name for a male nurse) in the militairy hospital of Breda. His wife Anna Schaddelee was 10 years older; born about 1770. I contacted in the meantime the genealogist of the Schaddelee-family. He can probably give me more details. I think, there are good possibilities to find out in Switserland where Theodor's family came from.

An Antje Schaddelee became member of the Dutch Reformed Church (Nederlands Hervormd) in Breda on 29th September 1843. Maybe your Anna S. (Gemeentearchief Breda; Lidmatenboek Herv. Gemeente Breda 1824-1852; Archief III-116, Inventarisnr. 141)

Hello Bernard

Thank you for your attachments - these are in fact the records that have brought me to this point, so I was aware of them! (Although I struggle to read them...)

The question now is how to get further back! :-) I have built up quite a few records of the family from that point to my own father.

Theodor's wife Anna's name appears with different spellings in different records. More than one is a variant of Schaddelee (others are Schaleling/Schabeling). Theodor and Anna also register the birth of some of their daughter Anna Maria's children in Breda. (One wonders where Anna Maria was... She does turn up at her son Bastianus Theodorus wedding though.)

If you see my last link above there is a Johanna Schad? widow of NN Dil, who is a protestant (record from 1839). That seems a fair chance to be the same person, as Theodorus died in 1834 and the last name is near enough. If so, Johanna/Anna is born in Werkendam, Holland... Which could mean that Theodorus met her in Holland. I have just seen this record today.

Presumably, Schobinger is also from Switzerland along with Theodorus.

thank you for the suggestion of Antje... I haven't searched much on the Schaddelee name... Another avenue to follow! I hadn't considered that abbreviation of Anna either.

I look forward to hearing anything else you find out from your contacts!

PS - I am not sure who the Coetzee de Villiers is you referred to earlier.

Regards,
Anton

Good evening, Anton,

Things are becoming a little bit more complicated.... Hereunder you will find the data, provided by mr. Piet Schaddelee:

\"Geachte heer Krijbolder,

Piet Schaddelee

As you see, in the mariage record at Werkendam it is stated, that Theodorus was born in Saarbourg (Saarburg), at the time under french rule, as Theodorus Fels! So, now you will be obliged to control not only his real place of birth, but also his real family name. I feel a chance from Dill to Fels is rather peculiar. (As far as I remember, the family name Fels also is a regional name in the Rhineland-Palatinate) However I do not doubt the marriage record as such. Maybe Theodorus was born in Saarburg, but through his parents he was citizen of one of the communities in the Canton of Basel, mentioned by Wolf.

Anna Schaddelee was born in Werkendam, as you can see from her pedigree.

There seems to be no alternative for you, living in Africa, than wait for further assistance of our forum, or ask a genealogist to search. Maybe the Genealogical Society of Basel can help you. Maybe you can ask our German part of the forum to check an eventual birth or baptism of a Theodorus Dill / Fels etc. in Saarburg.

For the moment I wish you success.

Regards,

Bernard Krijbolder

Dear Bernard

This is wonderful! Thank you so much. I think, after puzzling over it a bit, I understand most of what is here, although I am not sure of the sources of the alternate names of Theodorus. It does not look like the Werkendam records are available online, unfortunately. That was going to be my next stop.

It looks like Piet also has settled on the name DILL for Theodorus, however, and also for his parents.

This link

http://www.isis.breda.nl/SISIS.DLL/vond ... rt=&woord=

looks like a prison record for Anna... Very interesting altogether.

I am relieved also to finally understand some of the words on the Breda documents which have been eluding me so far, like oppasser. And re-reading your earlier mail I understand now the reference to the garrison hospital.

Thank you also Wolf for your kind assistance - most helpful. I find myself studying parts of Europe I never imagined now.

As you say, it does not look easy to get back further, but actually I am in England, so maybe a trip to Holland or further afield some time is on the cards! Certainly I feel more connection now to Europe than before.

Regards
Anton

Dear Anton,

I understand from Piet, that you now are in direct contact with him.

The record is a prison record indeed. You will have to find out whether it concerns the same Anna Schaddelee. I think it does.

Ziekenoppasser = a male nurse. However in times, when this profession still was rather primitive. There are a lot of stories known about their negligence of patients!

Success!
