Hallo,

Hallo Christina,

English is fine - we are trying to be multilingual on this forum, whenever necessary with some translations for specific threads.

Now for your questions. I don't know whether von Rotz also are German families - it might well be that Swiss von Rotz just moved to Holland via Germany - after all, without aeroplanes at that time you couldn't travel from Switzerland to Holland without crossing at least one more country.

A comment on Berna's response: Berna wrote her response when your query was placed in the Nidwalden (NW) forum - whilst von Rotz is an Obwalden (OW) family. I have therefore shifted it to the correct forum.
Now I cannot say from Berna's note whether this person at the NW State Archive has collected information on NW families in general, which would be available at the NW archive (but would not include von Rotz), or (because of personal interest in the family) on von Rotz of Kerns OW. We'll have to wait for Berna to clarify this.

What I can say (see my above posting) is that all Swiss von Rotz are citizens of Kerns OW, or at least originate from there. The "Stammbaum" mentioned by von Moos should therefore include your ancestors - IF these were actually Swiss and not a completely separate line in Germany.

What next?
1. It would be nice if someone could check the Stammbaum in the SGFF library; I'll ask on the SGFF mailing list, whether anyone visits the library anyway and could have a look.
2. If Berna confirms that this person in the NW State Archive has actually collected info on von Rotz, you should certainly e-mail the archive.

Christina,

it appears to me that you are a bit in a hurry. Archives and parishes are generally understaffed and have a lot of things to do.
Then there was the Easter period and a lot of people on vacation. Family research is not on their priority list so that quite some patience is required from us as genealogists. I would suggest that you give them some more time and then go back to them very nicely and politely. If you have not written to them in German things may be difficult since they may not be fluent in English and your request will be put right at the bottom of the pile. Anyhow try to be comprehensive.
If I can be of help in passing on your requests in an appropriate manner please let me know and I shall try and help.

Best regards

Eddie

In the Canton of Obwalden every village has so called Stammbücher, where all families are registered. You should ask at the Administration of Kerns if they can find something.

The adress and phonenumber:

Gemeindeverwaltung Kerns
Sarnerstrasse 5
CH-6064 Kerns
Telefon ++41 41 666 31 31

Kind regards and good luck!

Hallo Christina, you are really too much in a hurry, as it appears to me. It is more than likely that your great-grandfather belonged to the Swiss Regiment in Gorinchem, which existed till 1829. Copies of the Stamboeken (Kompanieroedel) are in the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie in The Hague (Den Haag) and are rather easy to study. Furthermore I also wonder whether you studied the Huwelijksbijlagen (additonal documents to the marriage inscription) in the Gemeentearchief Gorinchem or the Rijksarchief in Zuid-Holland. These sources will give you the best possible information, most likely including a certificate of baptism or birth.

I wish you succes. I think you already have substantial information. It is clearly mentioned that your great-grandfather was BAPTIZED or BORN in Unterwalden.

With kind regards,

Bernard Krijbolder

P.S. I wrote in english, because it is a language of this forum.

My 3rd great grandfather, Joseph von Rotz was born in 1807 at Kerns - died in 1878 at Sarnen. He married Maria Josefa Fanger. Their daughter and my 2nd great grandmother, Chistina Barbara von Rotz was born in 1851 at Sarnen. She married Franz Peter Enz who was born at Giswil in 1858. My grandfather, Emil Eduard Enz was born in Giswil in 1881.

If anyone can help me extend this line I would be very appreciative.

I have a von Rotz family - starting with my great grandmother Christina Barbara von Rotz, born in Sarnen in 1851, Her father was Joseph (b. 1807) mother was Maria Josepha FANGER. The father of Joseph von Rotz was Nicolaus von Rotz (b. 1761) at Kerns, wife Franziska Maria BURCH.

Any help available for me to learn more about this family would be deeply appreciated!

I am happy to let you know that I did find Casper Joseph von Rotz

Now I am looking for more information about his ancestors in Switserland, I know the name of his father and mother Jos(z)eph von Rotz and Maria Josepha Köhler. I have surch all te websites, Familysearch, my Heritage, geneanet, genealogie online, whoiswho, and so on.

I had contact with the staatsarchive in Sarnen but the can not help me because there is no digital information.

I would like to ask, could someone help me with this search ?

In 2006 it was Allright to write in English, I hope this still is, because my German and France are not efficient enough to write all off this.

if i'm not clear enough please let me know, kind regards
