Meaning of "zur" in Swiss surnames

Beitrag von Bruegger » Fr 21. Mai 2010, 16:29

I would like to know the translation into English of the word "zur" in Swiss surnames such as "Zurbrügg", "Zurburg", "Zurfluh", "Zurkirch", or "Zurlinden". I have read that "zur" could mean "to the" or "at the" or "over the". Would the surname "Zurkirch" for example mean that that the person who first adopted it lived "at the church" or, that the first Zurbrügg lived "over the bridge"?

Thanks,

Dale Bricker

Hallo Dale,

your translation at the seems the most fitting. Many Swiss names have this sort of additions, like Im Hof, Zum Steg, ...

Your idea that it referrs to some location should be right.
