Hello,
I'm searching for my ancestor. Looking for Jean Henri Sulin/Sullin/Soulie/Soulier, the name ended up as Souilljee, Solien, Soulier and a few other variations.
He was born between 1715 - 1730. We have data of his marriage in the Netherlands where they raised a family of 9 children, but have no idea of where he was born, nor when he was born.
My Dad says we came from the Elzas. So I thought to ask around if there's any knowledge about his birth in this area.
Where would I have to look, whom to ask to get access to the birth documents?
My dad's distant cousin has been working on our family tree for at least 30 years and she got stuck with Jean Henri Sulin.
Can anyone suggest anything?
Cheers,
Anneke

Hello Anneke, could you give us specific information about date and place of marriage of Jean Henri S. and the name of his wife? Were and when did Jean Henri S. die? Can I contact by e-mail your father's distant cousin, so that we can evaluate his genealogical efforts and the results up to now? At the Central Bureau for Genealogy in The Hague there are files under "Soulier" and "Soulie" (see": www.cbg.nl) At www.genlias.nl you find back almost the whole family, as from the 2nd generation, in Nijmegen and Utrecht, under "Soulier". Did your father's cousin find Jean Henri in the "Wolters Collection", a listing of marriages of military people? Considering that the family was of humble means at that time and the city of Nijmegen being an important garnison, Jean Henri could have been a soldier.

Hello Bernard,
Zij woont in Nederland.
Anneke

Hello Anneke, I just deleted by mistake a large message! However, please mail me your cousins e-mail address. I will then contact her after my holidays. I keep writing in english, because english is one of languages of this forum. Did you look after "Soulier" in the search machine Google? Very interesting genealogical information from France, Belgium and Italy about Souliers.

Thank you Bernard.
I wasn't aware about the languages rule in this forum. Make sense I suppose.
I did google Soulier and am taking all the information in. I also searched in the other links you gave me, and did find my ancestors I already have in our tree. I am only helping my distant cousin, it's she who's doing all the work really. I have a lot to learn. I'm posting, researching and translating mainly. And she'll confirm what we found after more intense research.
I started getting all excited about all the Souliers when I found them when I started this journey, though no new links have been found directly to my ancestor. I'm sure there's connections to be made in the future, but for now I have these links on file and will go through them when we found the birthcertificate or his name in other family trees.
I'll forward your email address and let my cousin contact you and you can take it from there.
I hope you enjoy your holiday.
I'll leave it at this. My job has done, until the next response regarding my search. I apologize for being such a dodo, I'll learn it the right way sooner or later.
Thanks all.

correctie
A correctie : Jean Henri was not a soldier. It would have shown on his marriage certificate, but there's nothing.
There is a report stating that he was, but the person who wrote it could not prove/verify or give the source, nor show any other correct data when my cousin asked for that. Sorry.
