je cherche un de mes ancêtres au nom de Charles Nicolas FIAT qui est né le 31 mai 1793 à Herzogenbuchzee (Swiss) qui s'est marié le 22 avril 1819 à Madeleine VETTER.

Fiat is not listed as a valid surname (today) in the Register of Swiss Surnames. One explanation could be that the family has become extinct in the meantime. More likely is one of the two alternative explanations, however:
- the name has been mis-spelled or mis-read, or was modified when going abroad;
- the family lived in Switzerland, but were not Swiss citizens.

What is the source of the spelling?

I guess the correct spelling could be FLATT, FLAD or FLAAD. These are valid Swiss surnames but not originally of Herzogenbuchsee.
