I am not sure where to place this on the forum
I would like to know who to contact to obtain details of a birth in 1825 in Silesia
I have only the name of the person who was born there. No other information is known. This makes it very difficult I know because I do not know the place
Thank you for any help

Dear Lorraine,
it is hard to give you some advice for your research. In 1825 there existed 2 parts of Silesia - the bigger one under Prussian rule - the smaller one (where my maternal grandfather's family comes from) under Habsburg rule. This is around Teschen/Cieszyn. I could use my contacts to museums in this area to ask if there is any help. Without the town's name it will be almost hopeless, but we can try!
Kind regards

Dear Firnzauberer
Thank you so much for your reply. My great great grandfather was Jewish German. I think that this would mean that it would be in Upper Silesia (Prussia) that I need to look for him? This would be Breslau/Wroclaw records?
I think I need to find a researcher in Breslau? It is going to be a difficult task. I don't know the city, I know 1825 and the name of his father. That is all.
You have been very kind to offer your help but i don't want to give you a big problem!

Hi Lorraine,
what about telling the name ??
When you talk about Breslau and maybe other parts of today Poland it could be that the old (german) records today are in Berlin - but with no name and no closer area nobody can help you. Do you have the death-certificate - does it tell anything ? Do you have the marriage-certificate - what does it tell ?
As far as I can remember there should be good immigration-documents in Australia - did you look for them ? Do you know the ship ? Do you know the leaving-habour ? Why do you think "Jewish" indicates Upper Silesia ?
At genealogy.net there are two lists for research in Silesia - but sorry both only in german language.

Hi Christine
Thanks for the reply and the advice
The name, as he was known in England on his english marriage certificate was Francis Louis Bamberger. He was born 1825-I have calculated this from the various UK census 1861,1871,1881. He doesn't appear on the census of 1851.
I have assummed that I need to look at Upper Silesia so I am possibly wrong and it could be either parts of Silesia
He was married in 1855 in England and that is where he lived. I have not found him on any immigration record into England nor on any naturalization paper. The english marriage certificate does not show any place of birth. It shows his fathers' name as Henerish. The english death certificate does not show a country of birth-only a place of death.
So, as you say, without a place of birth it is an impossible task.
Thank you for the website links. I don't speak German unfortunately
Best wishes

Hi Lorraine,
I looked in the online-phonebook and found over 1100 entries for Bamberger all over Germany - that does not help.
I looked in both lists and found for Upper Silesia a thread "Family Bamberger" - it was from 2005 and says
(translated citation)
*******************
Research for a family Bamberger - of lutheran or jewish religion
GUSTAV ADOLF BAMBERGER (corset-fabricant)
* 15.10.1794 or 1804
+ 02.11.1873 in Breslau
lutheran marriage in 1853
He was in Breslau since at least 1832 - his father was the merchant Carl Bamberger, already deceased in 1853 and lived lastly in Fraustadt (Posen). The marriage certificate from 1853 tells that Gustav Adolf Bamberger was the third son of his father.
**********************
I will try to contact the writer of this threat, as this could be a hint.
The area round WSCHOWA (Fraustadt) came 1815 after the "Wiener Kongress" to Prussia - there has been a jewish community and synagogue.
p.s. - Bamberg is a town in Germany (Bavaria) maybe the origin lies there as someone who comes from Bamberg is a Bamberger. Towns are often the origin of names in former times.

Re: Silesia
Hi,
Bamberger appear in the name index of Breslau already in 1832. It is as well a quite typicall jewish name, but not an exclusuvely jewish name. There is e.g. an Abraham Moses Bamberger in 1732 in Boizenberg, Mecklenburg. But there are Bamberger as well in SW Germany, e.g. bad Rappenau/Bonfeld.
greetings
