How can I find the birth record for my grgrfather Tobias Kappeler? Born 9-23-1829. He states his home is Baden Switzerland, but born in Aaragovia? He wrote about the Kappeler coat of arms. Stating that the Kappeler ancestors were Counts. The Bebie Family (his mothers side) were of high nobility and are descendants from Pocarns...What are pocarns?

Kappeler have been citizens of Baden in canton (= state) Aargau (Argovia) - amongst quite a few other places - since before 1800. It makes it highly plausible, however, that your ancestor was also born there.

I have never heard of Pocarns - should this be a surname? I also would be very careful with any "family tradition" mentioning noble descent: in most cases this is a fairy tale.

How to get on with your research?

What else do you know about your grgrfather Tobias Kappeler ... when did he emigrate? Depending on that the Civil Registration Office might be able to help you: ask them if your ancestor can be identified on their register.

If not, likely the church records will be the next choice - which have been filmed by the Mormons. With a known date of birth it should not be too difficult to find the baptism.

Hi, don't expect much nobility in Switzerland! But the City Archives of Baden can certainly help you. The Bebies in Baden were an entrepreneur family. Also have a look to this family Kappeler-Bebie.
