That is wonderful wording. Thank you!

I was wondering about
https://dls.staatsarchiv.bs.ch/records/ ... er_page=15 this citizenship. Does this entry of the Stohler family only include my grandfather and his mother, as it talks about on the top of the Stohler-Kiefer family sheet? Or did my great-grandfather also become a citizen that day? If he didn't, does that mean he received his citizenship before or never became one? Thank you for clearing that up for me, I wasn't sure.

In 1906, all three members of the Stohler-Kiefer family were granted citizenship of the city and thus also of the canton of Basel-Stadt. However, they also retained their original citizenship of Arboldswil.
Rudolf senior's parents, on the other hand, never became citizens of Basel; see
here, for example, at the death of Charlotte Stohler-Tschan in 1914.

I'm so grateful that you can help me with clarifying my misunderstandings! I appreciate it so much!
Also, I've never seen this kind of record before with Charlotte's death. Does that mean that this is the index of some other death record?

I've been digging through all the StrassenKontrolle entries for my great-grandfather Rudolf Stohler (1876) and came across one entry that I just can't match the street name to the list of streets in the journals.
https://dls.staatsarchiv.bs.ch/records/ ... wer_page=4 Can anyone else recognize it?

Yes, this is the alphabetical index to the duplicates of the death registers kept at the StABS. You could ask for a copy of the record (
Sterberegister A 1914 No 1387, Stohler-Tschan). However, no significant new information is to be expected, except perhaps the cause of her death, although often very general.

On October 3, 1892, Rudolf moved from
Zentralbahnstrasse no. 17 into the house of his brother-in-law Alfred Wiesner-Stohler, who ran a restaurant at the Elsässerstrasse no. 1. He later sold the house to a large brewery. His mother Charlotte and his elder brother Adrian also lived in the same house.

I was wondering, my grandfather Dr. Rudolf Stohler being born in Basel in 5 December 1901, how would I know which protestant church he might have been baptized in?

Hello Kristine,
Some of the digitized
Protestant church records reach up to 1901 or even beyond - but by no means all of them. The missing books are held by the
Evangelisch-reformierten Kirchenverwaltung following a centralization in more recent times, but are not digitized. I don't know if they are doing any research - but you can ask them of course.
Unfortunately, there is no overall alphabetical index for this period.

As the Stohler-Kiefer family lived at Grenzacherstrasse 60 during the period in question, probably above their own restaurant, the Protestant
church of St. Theodor was the closest. However, the baptism did not necessarily have to take place in the "home church".

Yes, this is like you were telling me about Liestal being the Church where many of my family were baptized when living in BL?
Thank you again for the help!

The authorities in Basel usually react quickly, even if it is only an initial response. Have you written to the e-mail address under
Kontakt? If so, you can certainly ask whether your request has been received correctly. If there is no response within the next 14 days, simply post again on the forum.
This morning I received an answer from the second email:
Sehr geehrte Frau Hake
Alice Wasserfallen

They must have their own archives? I'm so excited to see what they have!

All inheritance inventories up to 1925 came to the State Archives a long time ago. Not everything from later deliveries up to 1940 was kept due to the huge quantities involved. More recent inventories are still in the archives of the
Erbschaftsamt.

Yes, one from memory was called St. Albans quarter. The others I can't recall "off the top of my head" but when I come across it again, I'll update. I thought it might be a "common demarcation," but I could be confused.

The division of the city of Basel into districts (
Quartiere) has changed repeatedly over time, particularly as the city has grown. Today, this division has only statistical significance. A good overview of the current situation can be found

Recently, I've noticed several places on the internet stating that the unofficial motto of Switzerland, Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno, and the attitude is epitomized in the character of legendary Swiss hero Arnold von Winkelried.
Another place said it was, Unity, yes; uniformity, no.
I was wondering if you consider either of these accurate or if there is a better explanation?

No, not at all. But there is simply no general unofficial motto. Everybody may have his or her own. The
preamble to the Constitution, on the other hand, contains some official ones.

I was wondering if you know of any source that you would consider reliable information about the culture/habits/idioms/life/customs of Switzerland. There are always a lot of "pseudo sources" found around the internet that are varying degrees of correctness, but I'd prefer a source that a Swiss would feel is reliable. I'm hoping to include, in the book, things that are different in Swiss life to American life. I may be asking for the impossible, but I wanted to ask just in case you were aware of any trustworthy sources of information.

When I was searching for information on how Basel was affected by WWI, I found it difficult to find any detailed information. Usually, it was Switzerland as a whole. This is good general information, but not exactly what I'm looking for. Basel was right on the border and I would suppose must have had quite a few unique experiences. Then I found this book: War and Crisis: Basel 1914-1918 (Contributions to Basel History) by Robert Labhardt
https://www.amazon.com/Krieg-und-Krise/dp/3856166270
My Amazon only has the German version available for the book and the sample pages. Google translate doesn't work on it. Is this an established historical author in Switzerland with a good reputation? This seems to be part of a series? Do you think this would be a valuable source of information to learn about what things would have been like for my Stohler family during WWI in Basel? Or perhaps you know of better sources for photos/illustrations/stories?
