I'll let you all know as soon as I hear back from the Erbschaftsamt. I really hope that they're not destroyed.
I wrote back to the Erbschaftsamt BS for clarification, as you advised me, on May 2, 2025 and still haven't heard back. I was wondering, is this a normal amount of time?

I'm hoping you can help me. I have searched high and low for a good representation of historically accurate "traditional clothing" for the Canton Basel (BL & BS) area. I find plenty of "traditional clothing for other Cantons in Switzerland, but not for the Canton Basel area. I know these are now usually only worn for special occasions, but I'd like a photo/illustration of both mens and womens "traditional clothing" for the family history book.

Aeschenvorstadt, in
Marktplatz.

Ah, this makes sense to me. Thank you for the wonderful URL and examples that explains it. I will be able to put all of this information into my book, so that they will not be confused either.

My family has always been familiar with the fact that BS is a half Canton. And they've always wondered what that means. I was wanting to discuss in the family book an explanation for this.
I would guess, like the discussions that go on in America over the causes of the Civil War in the 1860s, there is a multifold and complex answer. For example, in America when someone asks what caused the Civil War, the quick and easy answer is, "slavery." And while true, it doesn't even begin to explain why and how it happened.
In 1833 the Canton Basel split into two halves. I would guess the "easy" answer is probably something like, "country vs city" differences? I don't think my family would be "satisfied" with an overly simplistic explanation. Neither do I think they would like an extremely detailed account of the situation. Do you know of a "medium" explanation source I could learn from?

I was wondering, from a genealogy standpoint, how did the 1833 Canton Basel split affect where archive records were kept? For example, did BS keep all the records before 1833 and then from that point forward they were split sort of thing or? I may not be asking this correctly; hopefully you will understand it.
Besides the violence and civil unrest which were horrific, it must have been a very hard time on my ancestors with all the changes in their lives. Do you know where I might find information on the personal side of the experience? Or is this an "in-person archive" type of record?
It looks as though my ancestors who lived through the violent change over were Jakob Stohler (Sr. born 1813) and his wife Anna Barbara Rudin (1813)
https://memory.bl.ch/familienforschung/ ... r%20Ziefen Then his parents, Johannes Stohler (1790) and wife Anna Schaefer (1792) and of course their children:

Oh how devastating! I noticed that BL sold much of their part, a few years later, all over the world. How sad the collection had to be broken up.
What a tumultuous time that had to be, on every level of life!

sepultus = buried

and there are a few words I don't understand, and I hope you can help me with them.
Heinrich Stohler. P Jaim.?. A Wustin?.
b? 25 August 1761. married 16 January 1789. Died 29 November 1794
Anna Rudin. 6? Arb?. Remarried? in 1797 to Ian? Munzar? 2 Absf?
n? 27 June 1790. Johannes?. 1c A Schufew? (?).108.
Should I take away from this entry 56 that Heinrich was born/married/died in Arboldswil? Or am I missing a clue?
Thank you.

Ich lese:
Heinrich Stohler P(arantes?) Hein(rich) A Rudin
(seine Eltern?)
b(aptizatus?) 25 Aug(ust) 61 cop(uliert) 16 Jan(uar) 89 (gestorben?) 29 Nov(ember) 94
Anna Rudin. v(on) Arb(oldswil) wieder cop 1797 Dan(iel) Meyer / v(on) Obdf
(=Oberdorf)
n(atus?) 27 Jun(i) 1790 / Hans. / c(op) A Schäfer (Nummer?) 108
Oberdorf geheiratet.

Wow! Thank you, Walter!!! This helps me so much! I just noticed the other day that FamilySearch.org has the father as another line (which corresponds with one of the 3 Walter Stohler's book lines) instead of they have a different person as the father, whereas I had Heinrich (1725) and now this document proves it. They are not included in Walter Stohler's book. It has several Stohler family lines in there, but they seem to be only followed of the few people who helped Walter with the book. That meant that anyone who had a line that was different than the participants was not explored. The book presents Pantaleon Stoler, born 1510 Bubendorf and his wife Elsi Schwizer as the progenitor of the Stohlers. Then only chose Werli Stoler, 14 Aug 1551 Bubendorf and wife Anna Vogt; Batt (Beat) Stoler, 26 Feb 1539 Bubendorf for the next generation and so on until it met up with a Stohler line that was part of the participants. I misunderstood Walter Stohler's book to mean that he had identified and recorded all the lines of progenitor Stohler.
I think they had hoped to form a Stohler Family Association which would expand the lines and they would make continuous new additions of the original book. The Stohler group apparently is no longer. The book is still for sale, but all of the contact information is no longer valid; which was disappointing. However, it would have been a great boon to my genealogy search if I was related along the lines they did expand.
