I am seeking my great grandfather Franz ( or Francis) Saladin. He was born in October, 1850, reportedly in BS or BL. He emigrated to the United States in 1872.

According to the Register of Swiss Surnames (FNBS) Saladin gained citizenship of the city of Basel (= BS) during the 19th century - so this is one alternative; this line becam extinct (in Switzerland) between 1935 and 1962 (two editions of FNBS). Contact the
Zivilstandsamt Basel and ask if they can identify your ancestor in their register: give as much info as you have, to make life easier for them - which increases your chances to get a response.
The second alternative depends on whether your info refers to today - or mid 19th century. Saladin have since before 1800 been citizens of Duggingen, and Grellingen, both BL nowadays - but Bern earlier on (Laufenthal).
The third alternative of people been born in BS/BL with citizenship somewhere else would be lines from Büren, Gempen, or Nuglar-St.Pantaleon (all Solothurn).
Let us know what the people in Basel have to say.

The Register Office of the City of Basel referred my question to the Staatsarchivar of Basel-Stadt. Daniel Kress of that archives reported he found no record of birth registration of Franz Saladin in 1850. Also that there were no mention in his geneological guides He wrote that the there were few records from the 19th century emmigration companies that were located in the city but that Franz Saladin was not listed. He suggested the Archives of Basel-Country(BL) with the email to
staatsarchiv@bl.ch.
I have sent an email to the archives.

Mr Beat Meyer of Basel- Landschaft StaatsArchiv has reported that when a researcher is available, the BL archives wil be checked for the fee of US$50 per hour including copies, translations, posting and banking fees. But because of the timing, this will probably take a while.
I have sent an email to the Staatsarchiv of Solothurn with no response. any suggestions?

This is a photograph that my great grandfather had and probably brought with him to the United States from Switzerland. It is quite possibly a photogragh of some family members.

Solyst: thank you for the information. The information has not correlate to any information I have yet but one more source of information for future reference..
The researcher at The State archives of Basel-Landschaft check all the possible areas I had requested for Information about Franz-Francis-Frank Saladin but found no birth or baptismal record. So now I will concentrate my research on Kanton Solothurn.
