I am looking for any information on the Otto Schlaginhaufen family from Kesswil. Otto was born April 9, 1899 and died March 19, 1986. He had a son, William (1922-2002) born and died in Illinois, USA. William Schlagenhaufen was my father. Any information will be appreciated.

Schlaginhaufen is a rather rare name: according to Familiennamenbuch the only pre-1800 citizenship is actually Kesswil TG; in 1853 a line gained the citizenship of St.Gallen (the city), other lines that of Zuerich (city again) in 1943 and 1955 respectively.

As Otto Schlaginhaufen was born after 1876, he will be registered at the Civil Registry Office of his "Bürgerort" (place of citizenship) - read
http://kunden.eye.ch/swissgen/CH-burger-e.html
for the basics of Swiss citizenship.
This means that this office will be able to issue a "Familienschein", described on
http://kunden.eye.ch/swissgen/intro-e.htm#schein
with all the information you are looking for - unfortunately not a cheap enterprise, but the only official way to get hold of this information (unless you are lucky enough to meet another descendant of your grandfather, who's got it already).

Responsible for Kesswil is the Civil Registry Office ("Zivilstandsamt") in Arbon: zivilstandsamt@arbon.ch. I would recommend you first ask just for a confirmation that your grandfather is on their records (an information usually given free of charge) and at the same time enquire what you are expected to do to get a Familienschein.
