Visit to Germany before World War I

Is it possible to trace a foreigner's visit to Germany just before World War I? He lived in Livland, Russia and travelled to Germany to work as a private teacher (tutor) there. Unfortunately, I don't know the exact place.

Are there any central archives I can write to in order to get copies of his visa application etc? I can imagine he had to apply for a visa in the German Embassy in St. Petersburg.

Hi Amherst,

do you have some more information? Like how do you know that he went to Germany. Is there a specific area you assume that he used to live and work in Germany? Do you have the name of the family/ ies he worked for?

Regards

Viktor

Hi Viktor,

Thank you for your answer. I only know that he was in Germany, nothing more unfortunately. I can imagine he had to obtain a visa fort that because he was a Russian citizen then. This is the most logic way fot me to go: to write to some archives. But to which ones? What do you think?

Best wishes,
Amherst

Hallo Amherst,

if you have a minimum of information, it would seem more promising to me you try to locate where that person might have been registered in Livland. Someone else may know better, but I doubt that imigration papers were archived and indexed.

Still - good luck!
