Looking for help with Moritz Hofrichter born in Guben, Prussia in the year 1830. He immigrates to America on Sep 30, 1856. He was a saddler or harness maker, although he lists himself as a laborer when arriving.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have found new information regarding Moritz. I now have the pension file (Civil War) for Moritz Hoferichter which contains his birth record as 14 March 1833. He lived in St Louis Missouri during the American Civil War. He married Frances Sutter in 1860 in St Louis Missouri. He also lived in Omaha, Nebraska until the early 1870's. He next moves to San Francisco, California. He was there in 1875 until his death in December of 1885.
He had two sons: George Henrich Emil Hoferichter and Moritz August Wilhelm Hoferichter. Often times sons are named after members of the family.

Hofrichter, Maria Bertha (7te child) was born 3.7.1837 Guben, parents were Friedrich Wilhelm August Hofrichter and Johanne Christine Bähr.

I was pleasantly surprised that there was a response about Moritz Hofrichter. I would like to note that sometimes he spelt it "Hoferichter" and sometimes it was recorded as "Hofrichter". I am not sure which one is correct. In Guben, Prussia are there two different spellings?
From Moritz's death certificate I have determined that he was born March 14, 1833. You mention that you have some documents about the family. Do these documents mention Moritz? Is there an online resource where they are located? And of course, are you related to the family?

there was in Germany till the end of 19 centuries no prescribed manner of writing for family name. It was written like it was heard.
I have some documents of Guben. My woman has in Guben forefathers.

in the church book for the Haupt- and Stadtkirche Guben can not I find the birth for Moritz Hofrichter in 14.3.1833.

What type of work or occupation did the Hofrichter's have? Did they own land? Did any of the family come to the United States?
Moritz Hofrichter was a saddler and must have been quite good. He worked in San Francisco for "Main and Winchester" a well known saddle and harness shop.
Moritz's sons were baptized at St Mark's Lutheran Church in San Francisco. In the 1880's this was a church that supported the German population in San Francisco.

Hello Peter,
In the 1870 US Federal Census Moritz lists himself as a shoemaker in Omaha Nebraska. Later that year he and his wife move to California. After his death, his wife runs a boarding house in San Francisco until the 1906 earthquake.
One of his sons becomes a glove cutter in San Francisco. The other son is a teamster; he delivers merchandize to customers.
There is a possibility that Moritz is related to this family. I am a little concerned that there is no baptismal record or birth record for him however. I am going to record this information as a possibility that still needs to be proved. I have been working on this "brick wall" or end point for 12 years. So you know I am very appreciative of this new information.

Hi Peter,
On the death certificate for Moritz Hoferichter his age was recorded as 52 years 9 months and 14 days. He died on December 28th 1885 in San Francisco. This was in the records at NARA for Civil War Pensions. I thought that this would be the best record to use for his birth date.
However his immigration record indicates he was 26 in 1856 when he came to America. When he signed up for the Missouri Infantry on 9 Sept, 1861 he was 31. The draft records for the Civil War on 1 July 1863 has his age as 34. The 1880 Census has his age as 50 years old. So after looking at all the records I see that there may have been a mistake on his death certificate. It looks like the birthday date of March 14 would be correct from all the different records. The year is either 1830 or 1833.
It is definitely harder to make a mistake on your age in the world we live in today!

Are the parents names listed? Is he a son of Frederich Wilhelm August Hofrichter or Julius Hofrichter? You will notice that his second son is named Moritz August Wilhelm Hoferichter. Are any of the records online that I could see? Is there a family tree online?

Are you able to tell if Friedrich August Hoferichter had brothers and sisters? If so would you be able to list them. I am not sure where Goldberg/Schlesien is located in relation to Brandenburg Germany. Would I need to look at a different forum for information on Jeremias Hoferichter?

Hello Ed,

the Hoferichter have come from Goldberg to Guben in 1794. Jeremias is the first.
The Guben church registers are filmed with the Mormons. There were many births in Guben, there lasts a lot of time the church registers to look.
