Egli von Luzern LU

Beitrag von lindanz » Mi 27. Jun 2012, 10:30

I'm trying to find the birth of Bertha Egla who married Frank Young in 1883 in Dunedin, New Zealand, I have her marriage printout which gives her parents names as John Egla (a farmer) and Elizabeth Hwiliman(possibly spelt wrong). Bertha is down as being born in Switzerland. I have searched Family Search and Ancestry. She is not on there. I am also looking for her parents marriage and any brothers and sisters of Bertha.

I have found Bertha Egli on the 1881 UK Census

Can anyone help? Thanks

Linda forgot to mention that the 1881 UK census recorded Bertha Egli aged 22 and born in Lucerne.

Her mother's maiden name was most likely Hürlimann, which was anglicized to Hurliman.

Berta and her parents were (most likely) not citizens of the city of Luzern, but another community in Kanton Luzern: as late as 1901 was the first citizenship of the city of Luzern granted to an Egli family - many others followed.

Unfortunately Egli is a very common name in the area, so it may become difficult to find her without a more precise information on her locations. She may still have been born in the city of Luzern, of course, and as a year of birth can be estimated, checking Luzern church records (filmed by the Mormons) may be a good idea.

thanks for replying, she was born around 1857 - 1859, I've ordered her death printout to see if it has more information, I've looked on Ancestry which has the Hurlimann book and can't see her in it, also looked on Family Search which brings up nothing, have also looked on the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland site which is hard to follow as I don't know the language so not sure where else to look

I have since been shown letters from her daughter to a friend in Switzerland in it has the name of Bertha's brother Albert, sisters are Lina(lena) Lousie and Mary. It also mentions the canton Kriens of Luzerne as to being the place they lived, is there any online database that has church registers available for Kriens that I can search, many thanks for any assistance that is provided.

Kriens is not a canton, but a city in canton Luzern - unfortunately not a place of citizenship for Egli - which doesn't mean they could not have lived there.

I very much doubt that Kriens church records are available online (there are hardly any Swiss church records online) - but they have been filmed by LDS (Mormons), and films can be ordered via their history centres.
