Hi Santiago, when did your ancestor emigrate from Switzerland? Embrach seems too far back for me.
Was he Catholic or Protestant?
Recall also the
answer from Wolf in 2004 ... see also
below.

Just to make sure my response from 2004 will stay available to the forum members - here it is:

No - I have no information on that: I just meant that there are more numerous citizenships in those two cantons than in Zuerich. Consequently, unless you have an indication of Zuerich origin, it is just more likely that your Schuler come from there. Depending on when your ancestors emigrated, their denomination will be a hint: Zuerich was strictly protestant, Schwyz and Uri strictly catholic - see
http://swiss.genealogy.net/intro-e.htm#div
I have further checked the brochure "Zuercher Familiennamen" which lists oldest mentions:
1265 Embrach: Heinricus dictus scolaris de Ymbrica
1467 Andelfingen: Hennsli Schuoler und sin wib (Hans and his wife)
1528 Berg am Irchel: Balthasar Schuler from Zuerich is priest there
1547 Berg am Irchel: Heini Schuler from Berg am Irchel marries Verena Staeffen from Flaach
1599 Volken: Konrad Schuler
So the Volken citizenship dates back fairly far - with an easy to explain name (Schule = school, Schuler could therefore attributed to both, a teacher and a student) chances are good that identical names have been created independently several times - which is an indication that the name will not have "immigrated" into the area.
Best regards - Wolf

Santiago's line are
Schuler von Volken. Diese Linie (Volken) bitte
hier diskutieren.
