Alte Familien von Elm (Emigration nach Amerika)

Beitrag von vluckow » Di 9. Sep 2014, 18:08

1845 : Frederick Zentner Sr, John Zentner, Joachim Rhyner, Felix Geiger, John Elmer, Fred Marty and families left Elm to travel to America.

1848 : Oswald Giger, Bert Ryner, Albert Elmer, Abram Zwifel, Rudof Hoesley, Peter Elmer, John Zentner Sr, John Pfeiffer, Martin Wooster, Rudolplh Eisley, Peter Babler left Elm to travel to America.

None of these groups were involved with the founding of New Glarus in Green County, Wisconsin.

Oswald Schneider traveled here at a later time.

Old (citizens since before 1800) families of Elm are: Bäbler, Disch, Elmer, Freitag, Freuler, Hauser, Kubli, Marti, Rhyner, Schneider, Stauffacher, Zentner. This covers many of the names you have mentioned - in some cases this tells you the correct spelling in Switzerland.

There are some names of families who are not Elm citizens: this doesn't mean they didn't live there; if they did, they may well have been listed as coming from Elm.

Giger are Engi citizens - also from the Sernf Valley. There are two books on Sernftal families - by Baumgartner and Heer. The links lead to translations into English.

Zweifel were a very important family in canton Glarus - with several citizenships since before 1800.

Pfeiffer are citizens of Mollis GL.

This leaves Hoesley, Eisley and Wooster: not Swiss names, but somewhat "anglicised". If we stick to families from canton Glarus, potential original spellings will likely be Hösli and Iseli - but I am at a loss for Wooster (you may have to search in other cantons for this one).

There are two cemetery lists from the New Elm Cemeteries located to the town of Black Wolf, in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, USA, with many names of families from Elm mentioned:
Winnebago County New Elm (Old) Cemetery aka Black Wolf
Winnebago County New Elm (New) Cemetery
