Siegrist in Kanton Glarus

Hello,
I've been trying to research my GGG great grandfather, Rudolph Siegrist, for quite some time now with limited results. I'm still not 100% positive he came from Canton Glarus and have no idea who his parents were. I'm desperate to gain more information on his origins but I'm not sure where else to turn. I'm really hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
This is what I do know:
He immigrated to the United States from Switzerland in about 1846. I believe he arrived at Louisiana as his military records state he served in the Mexican American war in 1846 in the LA infantry. I know he lived in New Glarus, Wisconsin just prior to his volunteering for the Wisconsin infantry in the Civil War. One of the census enumerations (1870 or 1880) states that he was from Canton Glarus, but then it is crossed out. Oh, and a couple military documents state that he was born in July of 1825. I have a pretty good amount of information on him while he was in America, but nothing about his life in Switzerland. I even paid for his Civil War pension file but it really didn't provide any new information.
He's really one of my favorite ancestors. He just seemed so courageous coming to a new country, then volunteering to serve in not one, but two wars! The more road blocks I face, the more desperate I become for more information. Lol.
I know there are a lot of Siegrist's in Switzerland but does anyone know where I might turn to see if I can confirm whether or not a Rudolph Siegrist, born possibly in Glarus, in about 1825, emigrated from Switzerland in about 1845/46??
Thank so much for any help you can provide!
Brenda
