Deutsche Übersetzung folgt unten
Bernard Joseph Linggi, Melchior Linggi, Frank Linggi and Dorthy Linggi came to the USA in the early 1900's. There father Anton Linggi was murdered in France around 1888. Anton had married Maria Josepha Catharina Nideröst, and she remarried a von Euw.

I am looking for information on Anton Linggi: parents, siblings, and region of origin.
Looking for information on two sisters: Carolina (Linggi) Pfyl and Regina von Euw.

I have information on a Charles Linggi and Frank Linggi in California before the 1880's which maybe a link, but has not proven out.

Hello Bernadette,
Anton Linggi was born about 1853 in Schwyz and he married Marria Josepha(Anna) Catharina Nideröst before 1877. Maria was born in Ibach on Novvember 25,1855. Her parents were Bernardin Nideröst and Anna Elizabeth Hicklin.
There children were:
Melchior Linggi was born in Lowerz on November25,1877 and he married Katherina Anna Dorig in Switzerland. She was born November 21,1879 in Schwyz. They were married in Schwyz about 1900 because they had a daughter,Maria Katherina Linggi, December 15,1901 in Schwyz.
Bernard Joseph Linggi, my Grandfather, was born in Schwyz on February 17,1879. He married Martha Betschart, born June 13,1881 Muotathal, in the United States in 1907. Her parents first names I do not have, but her mother?s maiden name was Ruedin. He came to America in 1902. He went back to Switzerland in 1906 and she came in 1907.
Dorothea Josephine Linggi was born on January 31,1880 in Schwyz. She came to America in March 24,1906. She married Frank Schuler in Oakland California.
Frank George Linggi was born in France on August 9,1885. His birth was at St. nom la Breteche, Versi, France. He came to America in 1903.
Carolina Linggi was born in 1889. I am not sure if she was born in France or Switzerland. I have no exact date. She did not come to live in America: she stayed in Switzrland and married. She married a Pfyl and they had three children that I know of: Sandmeier Alois, Lina, and Marta.

Anton Linggi was murdered in France about 1888-1889. His wife went back to Schwyz with some of the children after that. She did not have enough money, so she arranged for Melchior and Bernard to stay in France until she could bring them back. Later she married Anton Von Euw and had a child: Regina .

I am interested in knowing if Anton Linggi had any brothers or sisters . Where is the family originally from? I would also like information on Carolina Pfyl and her family, and Regina Von Euw. Is there any research that I can do for you in America? Ed

Hello Bernadette,

Have you had any information on the Linggi family in Schwyz? Did I give you enough information to find any connections. I am also interested in finding out where the records are located. I do know that there are probably some type of Catholic Church records: my grandmother(Martha Betschart Linggi) was very devout.
Thank you, ED

Christian:
I am very happy to hear this information. Sorry, I had not looked at the forum for a long time. I did not know the first name or the marriage date of Anton Von Euw. This confirms some of my suspicions.

What is the Pfyl Chronicle? Is it a book or a database(gedcom)?

I have a question about the way names are listed. In your post you list Alois Pfyl-Sandmeier, does this mean that Alois Pfyl born 30.5.1888 in Schwyz his mother's maiden name was Sandmeier? And am I correct in thinking that Karolina Anna Albisser-Pfyl, her married name is Albisser? I am hoping that these questions can be translated in a fashion that can be understood by you.

Thank you again for this information. ED

Ed - a technical comment first: if you activate the Notification just below the text window, you will get an email each time someone responds to your contribution. If you have forgotten that (or rather - have de-activated the function), you just need to click on [add to favourites], just below the latest message. For the notification to arrive, you have to make sure, of course, that your mail address in the forum is still up to date.

I don't know the Pfyl-Chronik, but would be rather sure it is a printed book - if not even a manuscript.

Alois Pfyl-Sandmeier was married to a Sandmeier - whilst Karolina Anna Albisser-Pfyl (maiden name Pfyl) was married to an Albisser. It is quite common in Switzerland to indicate the wife’s maiden name after the husband’s name (with a hyphen), although the family’s (and children’s) name is the husband’s name - well - used to be, until with modern legislation all sorts of other possibilities exist (whilst this is fine as an expression of equal rights, it must be a nightmare for future genealogists).

I have found a new reference to Anton Linggi in: Historisches Neujahrsblatt By Verein für Geschichte und Altertümer von Uri on page 17 under title iii Berfonal Berhältnibe. This can be found by going to Google Books. These are scanned images of books. There is a great number of books in all languages. A great number of historical books. You can search for a particular name or place. I have neverr seen it mentioned in this forum. Would there be someone that could translate this for me.

Thank you, Ed

Hi Ed - if you hope for a response, you should either give a direct link to the source, or at least mention the issue (year): this year book by now has been issued over 100 times!

Hi Wolf,
Sorry about the problems. I use Firefox and Safari as web browsers. They both go directly to the link on my computer. I am wondering if maybe there are some restrictions on the use of Google Books in Switzerland or Europe itself?
This is the writen text of Historisches Neujahrsblatt By Verein für Geschichte und Altertümer von Uri on page 17:
lll. Personal Verhältnihe.

Ter Pfarrer Joseph Anton Linggi von Brunnen distrilts Schwitz SchuleN'Inspector studierte in Luzern und Sitten in Wallis. Die Jahre seiner Studien 12 Jahre, seines Alters 49.

The bigger question is your access to Google Books for the use of people on this forum. Are you able to access it? Or is there a difference in Europe and USA?
Thank you once again. Ed

Hi Ed,

it is not a question of browser but a question of copyright. The latter may be different in Europe an in the USA. That's why it is possible that some books on Google-Books are accessible in the USA and not in Europe.

Hi Ed,
I am one of the maintainers of the Niderost family tree you can find in the net. There is only small spare time because of our jobs, so the website does improve very slowly. :-(

Since your first post in this thread (25.08.2006, 02:33:59) I found some additional information in the Passenger Lists from New York (Ellis Island). Generally, it's hard to find data from to the old homeland(s) of the emigrants, especially here in Switzerland. Sometimes the names are recorded absolutely wrong and sometimes the emigrants changed their names because of unknown reasons.
As an example, this is the case with Maria Josepha Catharina Nideröst Linggi: In the Passenger List from April, 23 1904, she is recorded as Marie Niederost.
On the same ship there also was her daughter-in-law Marie Dorig and they escorted some of Marie Niderost Linggi's nieces and nephews (kids from her brother Franz Michael Niderost, Hopland, CA).

One of my friends is a Linggi. We lost contact twenty years ago but reconnected recently. Maybe his parents are still living and I can meet them in the course of this year.

I will keep you informed.

Hallo Ed,

Markus

Hi,
I would like to recognize Micheline and Jean-Marie for their help in finding information in France in which Joseph Anton Linggi had a brother, Joseph Michel Linggi. Joseph Michel is married to Charlotte Lea Laigneau. We call this a "genealogy act of kindness". I hope that this translates into the positive way it is intended.

Melchior Linggi comes to America in 1903 and his brother (my grandfather)Bernard Joseph has been here since 1902. His wife and daugher come in 1904. I am in touch with these cousins. Bernard Joseph Linggi lists that he is going to see his Uncle Franz Niderost in the 1902 Ellis Island manifest.

There are also two other families living in California since the 1880's that have the Linggi surname. One is Charles Linggi who is living in San Jose in 1878. He marries a Louisa Caillat. Charles was born in Switzerland 1845. The other Linggi family lives in Sacramento, California. Frank Dominik Linggi first arrived in Philadelphia, Pa and then went into business in New York. He went back to Switzerland and married Mariana Holdener from Isberg, He comes to California, and is in Sacramento for the 1880 census. I do not know if there is any relationship between these two families and my family. I inform you of these two families just in case your friend would be related to them.

I have found that first names were often changed, but the surname was misspelled more often because of misunderstanding or mishearing. I look forward to any information that you can find.

Sincerely,
Ed

Hi Ed,

Franz Niderost (senior) was great-grandfather to two of my (very distant) "cousins" in the USA. So, this part of the Niderost and Linggi families is well known to me. Indeed, your great-grandmother (mother to Melchior and Bernardin) was Maria Anna Josepha Catharina Nideröst ;-)

In the meantime I asked my friend about his family, but he seems not to be very interested in this subject. It might take a while until I get more information about the relationships.

Yours,
Markus
