Hello Elwyn,

Unfortunately, in this canton the birth records of the civil registry are only public until 1900. But hopefully, the office of the civil registry will make you an excerpt of the family register, which obviously has been opened before 1900 for this family. They might charge you for this service, however. In any case, you should tell them everything you already know about the family you are looking for.

Peter

Many thanks. Can you tell me where to apply? Can I do it on-line?

This is the information given in the document on Genealogy in canton Aargau in German ... then there is an English version of it, which mostly is a translation - but also contains contradicting information: instead of "before 1900" it reads "more than 100 years ago" - which to me makes more sense, but I will not try to predict how this is handled in an actual case: if you ask in English the reaction might be less restrictive :?: :?: ;).

Under the circumstances I would recommend you contact the Civil Registry Office Lenzburg (responsible for Schafisheim), describe as closely as possible, what you want - and ask what exatcly they expect you to do (and pay).

BTW (as Peter already mentioned): In Switzerland it is not common to ask for e.g. a birth certificate - you ask for a "Familienschein", which is a compilation of all data of a couple (in case of more that one marriage of a man, all wifes), their children and their parents. So this becomes a bit more expensive - but the cost "per date" is much lower.

Wolf,

Thank you for your guidance. I’ll take your advice and go for the Familienschein.

So you think that applying in English might be more helpful? (I would have perhaps expected the opposite response. “Too lazy to write in German. We won’t help him.”). Interesting.

Well - this was not really meant seriously :? ... but Peter and myself (and likely others) would be interested to learn what the reaction is, which of the two contradicting rules is applied.

Aargau Kanton were extremely helpful, and sent me the Familienschein which covers Gottlieb Bolliger born 1879, both his wives, a divorce in 1905 and births of 3 children 1902 -1907, plus one the children’s marriages in 1935. So I got information from both before and after 1900. The fee was CHF97.

I e-mailed in German.

My next quest is to find 2 children born to that 1935 marriage. Marie Anna Bolliger who married Jakob Rauber in Winterthur. I don't have the children's names. Is that pretty hopeless?

Congratulations - nice to hear that some Civil Registry Offices are friendly and helpful ;-).

Let me summarize:

Bolliger Gottlieb (1879-1962)
married I before 1902 (divorced 1905)
Weichelt Dorothea (1872-?)
Children:
1. Bolliger Emil (1902-?)
2. Child (?-?) not sure which marriage [info given below: dies as infant]

married II 23 Dec 1905
Zulliger (geb. Scheidegger) Marianna (1866-1947).
3. Child (1907-?) [info given below: Marie Anna (* Bern 15.10.1907)]

I assume Emil Bolliger is your direct ancestor.

One of the other two children is Marie Anna Bolliger, who marries Jakob Rauber in (or from?) Winterthur on 22 June 1935; the couple has 2 children (names / dates unknown).

I assume the third child didn't get married (or at least no marriage is on your record).

You are looking for information on the two Rauber children. As Marie Anna would not be your direct ancestor, and because the children (born after 1935) may still be alive, it will be very difficult (due to the Civil Registry Ordinance) to get these data. You'll have to rely on luck - and I see two main alternatives:
1) Start a thread "Rauber in (von?) Winterthur ZH" in the Zürich forum.
2) Post a query on http://www.migrosmagazin.ch/bonus/bitte-melde-dich.

Wolf,

Yes you have the information accurately. The second child died as infant. Marie Anna was the third born, and by the second marriage.

I expected that there would be a restriction on my accessing the birth records. I’ll try your suggestion of opening a new thread on Rauber.

Thanks for your assistance.

Elwyn
