I am looking for Brandenberger's from Berg am Irchel. I have some information that shows my ggggggg grandfather Johannes Brandenberger was born there in 1697. (He died in France in 1754.) I would like to find some birth/baptism records to prove this if possible. Thanks for any suggestions on how to research this.

Re: Brandenberger in Berg am Irchel
Hi Ben, Johannes (Hans) Brandenberger probably came from the village of Gräslikon. There are many Brandenbergers who married before 1700 in Berg (see here).
I suggest you contact the State Archives of Zurich and ask them if they can find this family in the Population registers of 1698ff or Hans in the lists of absent citizens.
Do you know if he served as mercenary for France?
Peter

Thanks for the suggestions. I will continue trying to see what I can find.
I don't know much about him, just what I can find on geneanet.org which states that he was a "manant"

Re: Brandenberger in Berg am Irchel ZH
Hi Ben
I have digital copies of early census records (1634 - 1721) for Berg am Irchel, fraction Gräslikon (old name Gresslike). The only "Hans" who fits was born August 30, 1696; he (his parents and siblings) appear again 1708 and 1721. In 1721 he is registered as servant (as I understand/interpret the text) in a place near Colmar/Alsace. His parents and him are last mentioned 1725.
If you like to receive copies of these records you need to send me a private message. The Geneal-Forum suppresses E-mail addresses mentioned in answers. The Zuerich Staatsarchiv might have additional information (I did not (yet) copy the church registers).
