Hello, I've been researching my Swiss ancestry but have found it difficult to locate my g.g. Grandfather's roots in Aadorf and wondered if anyone might be able to help me.

My g.g. Grandfather was called Conrad Kuenzli, born in Switzerland during 1850s and moving to London in 1870s, where he was a tailor (he married a lady from Vosges while he lived in London). He was born in the Canton of Thurgau, possibly in Aadorf, but I do know that his family lived there for a time. This is all I really know about him and I'd really like to find out more if possible. Please can anyone tell me, is the name Künzli a derivation of Kuenzli, or perhaps the original spelling? I've had more luck finding Künzlis than Kuenzlis so far. Any information or advice would be gratefully received. Now here is my translation, thanks to Google! :)

Thank you very much, Claire

Vielen Dank, Claire

Welcome to the forum, Claire !

The spelling in Switzerland will be Künzli: Kuenzli is typical for countries/languages where umlauts (like ü) are unknown and are replaced (e.g. by ue).

Thurgau ist not really my area of research - so right now I can only confirm (from Familiennamenbuch) that Künzli have been citizens of Aadorf since before 1800.

According to a list of church records in canton Thurgau, there exist "Familienregister" for Aadorf for the 17th to 19th centuries. These don't seem to be included in the films taken by the Mormons - so it may be best to ask the Staatsarchiv Thurgau about them ... unless you are lucky and another forum member can give you a more detailed advice.

Hi Wolf,
Thanks so much for this information. The confirmation about the spelling is really very useful for my research - and also knowing that the family potentially lived in Aadorf for generations is extremely helpful too.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for more information that someone might share in the future.

Best wishes,
Claire

Hello,
I'm extensively researching the Künzli vom Aadorf as my great grandmother was named Künzli.

I found "your" Conrad Künzli:
"England and Wales, Census, 1901", FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9Z6-MJK : Thu Feb 13 06:07:16 UTC 2025), Entry for Conrad Kuenzli and Leonie Kuenzli, 31 Mar 1901.

Leonie was from France and most probably had another maiden name which is unfortunately not indicated.

He married 1.6.1878 and died 19.7.1909. This data is from the household register at the Staatsarchiv TG.

His father Konrad Anton was a brother of my great-great grandfather Dominik Künzli.

Welcome to the family :-)

Kind regards,
Marcel

Just in case somebody is interested. I found the documents from the 1911 census in MyHeritage and downloaded them.
Conrad and Leonie had 4 sons - Frank *1881, Albert *1883, Rene *1887, William *1889
