Herzog / Herzig in der Schweiz

Beitrag von phertzog » Sa 7. Aug 2021, 14:05

Welcome to the forum, phertzog ;).

Let me start with a technical comment: in this forum we discuss a single family (defined by name and place of citizenship) only in each thread (whenver possible) - but then all about this family in a single thread. I have therefore re-named and shifted your posting.

You'll find the places of citizenship for Herzog and Herzig (official spellings today) families in The Register of Swiss Surmanes ... there is a fair number of them, spreading over the larger part of German speaking Switzerland.

All Hertzog families (spelling today) gained Swiss citizenship in/after 1884, originally from France or Germany. As spelling was in earlier centuries not as fixed as it is today, it is quite likely, however, that you will find the spelling Hertzog in earlier documents - for families spelled Herzog today. I our thread titels we always use the spelling listed in The Register of Swiss Surmanes.

Please, use the search option to find the already existing threads on Herzog and Herzig families. If you know the original place of citizenship of your ancestor - and a thread already exists for this line, please, "answer" in this thread to place your specific questions. If no thread exists, start a new one. If you don't know the place of citizenship, but e.g. place of birth or marriage, use this as starting point and name the tread accordingly (can be re-named once we know better).

I you have no information from where your ancestors originated, try fo find a clue first: especially with a widespread name like Herzog no effective search is possible in Switzerland if you don't have a starting point.

I wish you luck and success for your quest.

Hello Wolf,

Thank you for this answer.

Your say that some Hertzog migrated back from France and Germany more recently. That is possible.
But right now the information I've got indicates many of those Hertzog originated from Switzerland (XVI century). I posted the original post on Homburg TG since some clue indicates that a lot of Hertzog with a T are from Thurgau region (and Friburg too). It seems to be one of the most concentrated region in the world with the spelling. However, I am not sure this information is valid too. However we have some other clue that the spelling for the name changed in Switzerland in the XVI century. Some ancestors are from Bern. But we are not looking for a specific family as we are tracking more than one. We'd like to find a genealogist with this family name (or one that have a deep understanding of this family) that may tell us more about it.
It is very unlikely that Hertzog concentrated in Switzerland in early period resulting from immigration from France and Germany. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe the information collected from many Swiss database is wrong. This is what I try to figure out.

No: I said these families were from France and Germany when they gained Swiss citizenship. Whether they were descendants of Swiss emigrants, migrating back, cannot be deduced from the Register ... their ancestors could as well have lived in Germany for many centuries before. Herzog (and related spellings) are widespread in all German speaking regions of Europe.

As mentioned before - spellings were not fixed in the 16-18th, even early 19th centuries. So - don't put any importance on whether the name was spelled with or without T. I have seen records (not Herzog, but other names) where in a baptismal entry the child's and the father's surnames were spelled differently! If you check sources from different writers, this is even more common - the spelling often depended on the writer's preference.
phertzog hat geschrieben: Sa 7. Aug 2021, 15:31I posted the original post on Homburg TG ...
As mentioned before: we discuss single families (defined by name and place of citizenship) only in each single thread. Your question covered several spellings in several cantons. If you have a question about individual Herzogs, citizens of Homburg TG, than this thread is the right one - otherwise not.
phertzog hat geschrieben: Sa 7. Aug 2021, 15:31... since some clue indicates that a lot of Hertzog with a T are from Thurgau region (and Friburg too).
Again - don't put too much importance on the spelling (with or without T).

If there is such a person amongst the readers of this forum, (s)he will see your post here, in "Switzerland General". But this is not the place to discuss details of many different, not related Herzog/Hertzog/Herzig lines: all these discussions in a single thread would sooner or later end up in complete chaos.
phertzog hat geschrieben: Sa 7. Aug 2021, 15:31It is very unlikely that Hertzog concentrated in Switzerland in early period resulting from immigration from France and Germany.
I have to agree completely: the entries with Hertzog a few centuries ago will either be families which today are spelled Herzog - or have become extinct (in Switzerland) since then. A Swiss Hertzog line emigrating to Germany, keeping the spelling, and then migrating back to Switzerland is not impossible, but rather unlikely.

I agree. I don't put too much importance on spelling. This is the reason why this group is open to Hertzog but also Herzog, Herzig, Herzug. Hersoch, Herzoc... We are looking for at least 20 variations of the name. I know that this name can change over time for many reasons ... maybe we will be able to put names on drunk or deaf priests ...

Again - sorry - no detailed discussions on individual lines in this thread - if that is what you mean with "group".
