quick one:
Year 1808, 18th November. In front of me Francois Antoine Klein , civil registration officer of Rhinau, Dep. Rhinau, Canton Bonfeld, appeared Francois Antoine Andenmann, laborer at Rhinau, 37y, who presents a male child, born at midnight, of him the reporter and of Marie Anne Andés, his wife, 26y, and to whom he declares to give the name of André. Said declaration and presentation is made in presence of Sebastian Schwaab, 55y, sexton at Rhinau, and Martin Schmitt, 52y, judical officer at said location; and the father and testemonies signed together with us the present certificat after is has been read out to them.

Re: Andermann record translation - church connection?

Verfasst: Mi 26. Feb 2025, 14:15

Additional request regarding possible church connection:

My Andermann progenitor from Alsace married in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1835
He was a carpenter who built St Mary’s chapel in Convent, Louisiana in 1849 with his son Ernest assisting him. His family lived next door to St Michael’s church down the river road

In a deeper dive into the town of Rhinau, I discovered a website about the restoration of their local church Eglise Saint Michel

https://www.fondation-patrimoine.org/le ... inau/63541

I noticed that the birth record refers to sexton (caretaker of church) as witness. This makes me wonder if perhaps Andermann family lived near or on the church property? Additionally, I question whether Francois Andermann could have been involved in the building of St Michel's church? Could son Andre have worked with his father to learn the skill of carpentry?

Can anyone assist with these questions or direct me to someone that may be able to help?

Nice picture, your Anderman ancesters engaged in church construction over generations. But frankely, looking at Andre's birth record only, it might be just as likely that sexton Schwaab and judical officer Schmitt stood in as testemonies because father Francois did not have any of his family, friends, or neighbors.

Possibly more promising to browse for more family events, to estimate what kind of laborer Francois was, how well established the family was at Rhinau, or whether Schwaab and Schmitt appeared more often as "wild-card"-witnesses?

Guten tag,
Gruss

I am unable to find any death records in Family Search, Find a grave, BillionGraves, etc.

Re: Andermann record translation - Bonfeld vs Benfeld

Birth record translation states department Rhinau, Canton Bonfeld
In trying to track down the actual canton, the only one that I came across in BasRhin today is a former canton of Benfeld that was merged with Erstein in 2015 - just want to make sure that I am researching the right location - please confirm - thanks! Laurie

Sorry to ruin your day but the document you refer to doesn't concern an Andermann but Studenmann.

If you check the alphabetical index, Studenmann is listed among names beginning with "S." This is also confirmed by the father's signature.

Another reason why you have to be very careful with indexes provided by familysearch.

What leads you to believe your ancestors came from Alsace?

Earlier thread asked me what makes me think my ancestor was from Alsace

Louisiana census records states he was from Germany
Area where he settled is German Acadian coast in St James parish, Louisiana in which Germans immigrated from Alsace Lorraine (territory that historically has switched between France & Germany)
Death certificate of his son Ernest states his father's birth place was Alsace
Death certificate of his daughter Emma states her father's birth place was France
