Mulhouse textile possible link to Andermann family heirloom

Beitrag von yapper » Mo 10. Mär 2025, 19:52

Throughout the years, a cherished tapestry has passed from generation to generation. My mother would display the family bible onto this fabric runner (approx 35 x 15 in size) during special occasions or religious holidays. The textile or woven fabric has what appears to be a monogram on its borders & an 8 pointed star motif on its corners. Unfortunately, I have been unable to identify its origin or symbolism. (see attachments)

Over decades, I have been down many research paths in an attempt to track down my Andermann ancestor’s European origin
Once the paper trail ended, I even tried Ydna testing but again no traction

Here’s what I know about Antoine ANDERMANN:

Estimated birth between 1803 and 1813 (based upon backdating his age upon death in 1858)
Unknown when he migrated to America (earliest documentation is his marriage in USA)
Marriage in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1835 (no parents listed) to Hortense Katterlet (from Belfort, France)
Louisiana census in 1850 states that he was from Germany
French newspaper of his death in 1858 states that he was born in Switzerland
Death certificate of his son Ernest in 1926 lists his father Antoine’s birthplace as Alsace Lorraine
Death certificate of his daughter Emma in 1932 lists her father's birthplace as France

Here’s what I know about Mulhouse:

Historically, the territory of Alsace Lorraine has switched between France & Germany
Also, my understanding is that the town of Mulhouse was at one time part of the Swiss Confederation
Currently, the town of Mulhouse in Haut-Rhin, Alsace is part of France near the border of Germany & Switzerland
Mulhouse also imported cotton from Louisiana for textile production & had links to the Levant
At one time, Andermann Ydna test results of R1b subclade RM269 flagged potential Levant origins

Note: Extracted verbiage from Wikipedia website regarding Mulhouse

"The town's development was stimulated first by the expansion of the textile industry and tanning, and subsequently by chemical and Engineering industries from the mid 18th century. Mulhouse was for a long time called the French Manchester. Consequently, the town has enduring links with Louisiana, from which it imported cotton, and also with the Levant. The town's history also explains why its centre is relatively small.”

Hoping that Mulhouse could be the missing piece to solve this heritage puzzle (keeping my fingers crossed)
Any assistance or guidance that can be provided is appreciated !!
