Schaller in Delémont JU

Courtney A. Wiley fragt (deutsche Zusammenfassung weiter untern):
My grandmother (Jeanette Schaller) was born in Delémont, Switzerland. Her parents and their 9 other children owned an Inn, and my great-great-grandfather was chief of police in Delemont in the 1800s. My grandmother's family fled their home with the oncoming threat of WWI. I would love to know my genealogy, and if I still have ancestors there.
Hi Courtney,
you don't mention your grandmother's year of birth - but I assume it was early 20th century, just before WWI. In this case she and her family will be registered in the civil register of her place of citizenship (read http://kunden.eye.ch/swissgen/CH-burger-e.html for the basics of Swiss citizenship) - question is: what is her (parents') place of citizenship. I have listed some information on Occurences Schaller in Switzerland - which indicates that Delémont is not a place of citizenship for Schaller, but Corban, Rebeuvelier, Vermes, and Vicques are in canton Jura (plus several others in other cantons). If your grandmother was actually born in the city of Delémont, however, her birth should be registered there, irrespective of place of citizenship. I would therefore recommend to contact the Civil Registry Office Delemont and enquire, whether they can locate your grandmother on their register, and give you her place of citizenship; give them as much info as you have - especially her date of birth would be very important. The next step would be to contact the Civil Registry Office of this community, and ask what you have to do the get a "Familienschein" (a collection of vital data) on your family (also ask for their fees!). They will not be allowed (by Swiss privacy legislation) to hand out any information on living relatives, however - you could try Schallers in the area, picked from the telephone directory - or hope that someone reads the posting on this forum.

hi! i typed my name on google and i found this forum and this thread...c'est bizarre!
i'm francesca and i was born in rome...and i live here. my family name is schaller and my grandfather was from Delémont. he moved to italy when he was about 20yo and he got married, therefore my father was born in rome, but we still have contacts with our swiss relatives. it's a wonderful family, i really love them... i really would like to see them again as i was there just once, when i was 6years old.. many of them came to rome from time to time, and my parents went there again a few years ago...but i didn't go, pity!
the family is quite big, my grandfather had 12 brothers and sisters, you can imagine how many cousins has my father!! one of them came 2years ago to rome to visit us and gave us a family tree (from the 1800 till now... it's wonderful!!)...he studied the story of the schaller in switzerland... i'll ask my father to give me the family tree and i'll check if there is somewhere the name of jeanette schaller.. (maybe we are also relatives!!), otherwise i can write him an email and ask...if you have other information about your grandmother it would be great, as i guess there are many people called jeanette schaller.
write me an email if you are interested.

by the way, where do you live in the United states?
hope to hear from you soon!

a presto!!! (bis bald!)

francesca

Greetings,
I know there hasn't been any posts here in quite a while, but was hoping that perhaps someone with some additional information might come across this.

I have 3 lines of Schallers that are in the USA, originating from Switzerland, and I believe from the Jura area.

Line 1
The same as what Courtney had posted years ago.
Jeanette Schaller, born 1908 in Delemont, migrated to the USA. Her parents were Gustave Schaller (1867-?) and Lucienne (unknown surname). It appears that Gustave might have been born in Bern, however, his last residence was Delemont.

Line 2
Gustave Louis Schaller, born in Vicqûes, Bern on 27 Jan 1862 and died on 20 Mar 1942 in Connecticut, USA. He arrived in the USA around 1910. His parents were Leon Schaller (1860-?) and Victoria Moutett. I believe Leon Schaller was born in Vicqûes, Bern as well. (I realize this isn't the board for Bern, but please bear with me)

Line 3
Louis Alfrede Schaller, born Vicques, Delemont on 27 Jun 1862, died in Manchester, Connecticut, USA in 1942. He married Philomine Reine Friche before coming to the USA. It appears he made multiple trips from Switzerland to the USA, with the final trip (moving his family) in 1901. Louis Schaller's father is Valere Schaller (B: 1808, D: 1883 or 1888) and his mother is Anna Martha Koller. I can prove this lineage back through Valere Schaller.

Now, I believe all three lines are related through a common ancester, as my wife's grandfather has been collecting information and funeral cards for decades on all these families. Unfortuantely, he's passed away, so I can't ask how they are related specifically.

I did find someone in regards to Line 2, saying that Leon Schaller's father is the same Valere Schaller (from Line 3). While I can't prove it, it seems to make sense based on data points that I have. I just can't interconnect Line 1 Schaller's to the other two. In regards to Vicques, Delemont/Jura versus Vicques, Bern - I am not completely confident that people have mixed up the locations, especially with someone believing that there is a common ancestor between Line 2 and Line 3.

I'm hoping that this detail will find someone who might be in a position to help.

Thank you for the help,

Erick

Nothing has been mixed up - there is only a single community Vicques in Switzerland. It used to be in canton Bern - until in 1979 canton Jura became a new, independent canton. So - at the time in question here, it was in canton Bern - but if you check a modern map, it now belongs to Jura (as does Delemont).

Thanks a lot for the clarification. Obviously my knowledge of the area is quite limited as it pertains to the cantons. It's nice to get confirmation it is, indeed, all the same place.

Thanks,
Erick
