Hello,
I am new to the list and don't know if writing in English is okay...I speak some French but not German.

I am searching for information on my ancestors as follows:

Beda Buttler, born on July 15, 1857 in Mumliswil and his wife
Melonia Hafner, born on December 20, 1957 in Holderbank
See Hafner von Holderbank for further discussion on this line.

They married on July 16, 1857 and left for the U.S. in 1881.

Hi Susan,

English is fine (certainly much better than any computer translation into German) - I'll provide a summary in German below.

What you should consider, however, though it may be difficult in non-German speaking countries, are the German Umlauts - the letters with the dots on top. What you are looking for is the Büttler family of Mümliswil: they have held citizenship there since before 1800. Unfortunately this is all I can tell you about this family.

If the couple left Switzerland after 1876, they should be recorded in the Civil Registry Office responsible for Mümliswil - the one for Thal-Gäu. Contact them and ask if your ancestors can be identified in their register and - if yes - what you are expected to do to get a Familienschein (a combination of birth and marriage certificates, death certificates and data on children only if sent from the USA at the time, possibly data on the parents [if available in 1876, when these Registers were set up]).

If you get further info, come back to the forum with such data - possibly you'll find further help here.

Just a general comment on the forum: in a single thread only a single name should be discussed - i.e. only Büttler in this thread. Should you get further info on Melonia Hafner (BTW - I assume born 1857 - not 1957) and want to discuss this - please, start a new thread (unless there is one on the family already): the two threads can then be linked.

Das Paar wanderte 1881 in die USA aus.

Ich habe auf das zuständige Zivilstandsamt Thal-Gäu und die Möglichkeit des Familienscheins hingewiesen. Weitere Hilfe wird dankbar entgegen genommen.

In diesem Thread sollte nur Büttler diskutiert werden. Evtl. weiterführende Informationen sollten in einem eigenen Thread vorgebracht werden - die beiden Threads können verlinkt werden.

I did some resarch in Mümliswil and I found your Beda.
On his birth act is written unehelich (illegitimate), mothers name Rosalia Bütler and grandfather Benedikt.
