I am researching my great, great, great grandfather Dominik EHRLER. The following is taken from the NY Petitions for naturalization:
Dominik EHRLER, Naturalization Date: 20 Oct 1879, Former Nationality: Swiss, Birth Date: 23 Mar 1856, Arrival Date: 24 Jul 1871, Title and Location of Court: Common Pleas Court, New York County, Volume: 487, Record Number: 208, Wittnes = Herman Rosenkranz, Keeper 335 6th St, NYC
According to another source he was born in Schwyz - but not specified whether the city or the canton.
How can I find his birth certificate or any information on his family?

Ehrler is a typical name of canton Schwyz - with citizenships since before 1800 in several communities of canton Schwyz - and none outside this canton until 1885 - see Occurrences Ehrler in Switzerland.
Dominik Ehrler emigrated before the modern Civil Registry Offices were set up in 1876; at least if his parents stayed in Switzerland, he should still be registered at the Civil Registry of his place of citizenship. Question is - which was his place of citizenship? Any clue? If not, you'd just have to try all of them - but with Schwyz itself being one of these communities, that'll be the one to start: send them an e-mail and enquire
- whether they can identify your ancestor on their register, and, if yes,
- what you have to do to get a Familienschein.

Sara sucht nach Angaben zu ihrem Urururgrossvater, Dominik Ehrlen, * 23.3.1856, eingewandert in die USA am 24.7.1871, erhält das amerikanische Bürgerrecht am 20.10.1879. Er ist in Schwyz geboren - es ist aber nicht bekannt, ob in der Gemeinde oder dem Kanton.
Die potentiellen Bürgerorte sind unter Vorkommen Ehrler in der Schweiz aufgeführt. Ich habe vorgeschlagen, es erst einmal beim Zivilstandsamt Schwyz selbst zu versuchen.
Falls jemand hier im Forum weitere Hinweise geben könnte, wäre das natürlich sehr hilfreich.
